Teenage marriage. What a sham? Is there anything like teenage marriage as they want us to believe? I think we should discard such notion. In Ibadan, a popular city in Yorubaland, there are many young girls of 12 to 16 years unmarried who have given birth to children without fathers. In a situation that in the Northern part of Nigeria, the same girls who fall within the age group of the Ibadan single kid-mothers were officially married by willing suitors. In other countries in the world an 18 year old is considered an adult and held responsible for their action hence they can go to jail, get an apartment, get a job, get a driver licence etc. But our Nigeria culture sees you as an adult when you finish a higher education or get a good job. Prehistorical Nigeria allowed the marriage of 18 year olds cos at that age it was believed that all here female organs were already properly formed and she was ready for child bearing and not at arisk of diseases like vvf which occurs as a result of unready reproductive system.

Will I give my daughters hand in marriage at 18? If she so decides to want to get married, my responsibility is to train her the best possible way to be able to make intelligible decisions.
