Hi, compliments of the season to my Dear Nairalanders . Please i recently upgraded my iphone from 2.1.1 to 2.2.1 and since them i have been having this problem with the phone. The phone can no longer see network from Mtn, V-mobile, glo e.t.c and everytime it try to connect and succeed,  it will only appear for a while and return back to no service. Please can somebody give me advise on what to do and how to get it fixed permanently. Cheers!

The phone is a 3g iphone. i did the update through the itune software update in my pc. Initially when i first bought it, it was working well with our network ie . mtn, vmobile and glo e.t.c and without no service problem, not until the upgrade from 2.1.1 to 2.2.1. The modem firmware on the phone is 02.30.03. I hope all this info will help. Thanks.

Dude, even with the millions of warnings out there, you should have known you shouldn't update using the 2.2.1 IPSW from Apple. There is currently no unlock for 02.30. Your best bet right now is to check the boot-loader version. If it is 5.8 then you are in luck, if not (as in it is 5.9) then you are out of luck.

For instructions on how to check the boot-loader version, use Google.

as Logica said, it's shocking that you went ahead to update despite all the warnings against that. As it stands, take Logica's advice as the only slim chance you have at the moment.

Oh yeah, u can try out TurboSIM. Not sure if it "unlocks" 2.2.1 but @ this point, u r short of options.

The truth is that you have to be a real techie to do it unlock it yourself, and from what I've seen from all posters replying, they're just giving you trial and error solution. If you want your iphone gadget unlocked and working under 15mins, get a genius and pay for his service.

Once again I advice you, don't listen to all these do-it-yourself posters/self-acclaimed engrs. You might get urself in a worst situation than you currently are. Get an experienced techie, someone who has done it live. Should only take a couple of minutes and your gadget should be back on its feet.

I had a client walked down to my office with the same problem. He updated is iPhone using iTunes and after the update, when he restarted the iphone he got this exact error msg on the itune connected with the phone "The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported. Only compatible SIM card from supported Carriers may be used to activate iPhone. Please insert the SIM card that came with your iPhone or visit a supported Carrier's store to recieve a replacement SIM card." It took me two days to finally unlock the iphone. PLEASE DON'T DO IT URSELF OR YOU'LL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE MADE TO YOUR $400 GADGET.

Dude, I doubt you know about the iPhone as several of the guys out on this forum, trust me. If the phone that took you 2 days to unlock (a process that takes less than 10 mins) after an update is a 2G, then you must be the dumbest "techie" in history. If it is a 3G, then you are still dumber as I have pointed out there is currently no soft unlock for a 3G on 2.2.1 except the boot-loader is version 5.8 (and very few phones are on the 5.8 boot-loader - you can hardly find any). The only hope is a hardware "unlock" using TurboSIM or SIMFreer. But if the original poster is foolish enough, he can call you and have himself swindled.

this should serve as a lesson; jumping the guns and upgrading without prior research is invitation to bricks. since the iphone normally comes locked and needing to be hacked open to use outside officila networks (HINT: MTN, Zain, Etisalat, Glo etc are NOT official networks) it then stands to reason to at least assume that every update MUST be warily applied on the strength of the probability that Apple must actively be trying to foil hacking and illegal unlocking.

As logica said, baseband 02.30 can be downgraded to 02.28 and be vulnerable to the Yellowsn0w unlock. it requires a fairly technical method involving command line, secure shelling, etc. the tool is called pHaseBanDowngrader and only works on the 5.8 bootloader. if your phone is older than the 2.2.1 update then chances are good you already have the 5.8 bootloader; newer phones come with 5.9.

before you proceed you need to be able to do the following:

1. tunnel into the phone using SSH or similar invasive methods (iphone Pc suite, iphone Tunnel suite etc)

2. download, install, and know how to use mobile Terminal shell commands.

(im not sure but i think MT comes with SSH built in)

this relates to our phone conversation earlier.

official unlock comes immediately after official activation. this means you need to be online and let itunes do its thing.

lots of phones with some sort of sim proxy (turbo sim, gevey etc) are sold as "officially " unlocked. they're bogus. network keeps dropping, so-so 3G signal etc.

since you say the model number thing is deceptive, here's a great way to find out.

officially unlocked iphones, yellowsn0wed iphones and iphone classics unlocked by bootneuter all share one common feature: in Settings the CARRIER option is always present. in sim proxied phones the case is not so. CARRIER, which allows you to manually select network, either does not appear or appears briefly before disappearing in fake unlocks.

bootneuter tears the baseband wide open by removing all sigchecks and modifying the seczone where unlock states reside, yellowsn0w spoofs the baseband into thinking the sim is officially sanctioned and thus allows full network access. sim proxies, on the other hand, do not directly interface with the baseband seczone. they use a sort of weakness in the networks via the IMSI (Int'l mobile subscriber identity)and spoof the mcc/mnc (Mobile Country Code/ Mobile Network Code) to get service. because the baseband is not fully exploited, features are limited to the sim curently installed. hence the ability to select carrier is normally unavailable. and because 3G uses slightly different approach to service, mostly 3G service on sim proxied phones is very spotty.

therefore any phone parading itself as official unlocked but without the CARRIER option in Settings is almost certaily  fake.

for your info, that message above always appears whenever a non-sanctioned SIM is in the iphone. anyone who knwos what he's doing KNOWS that the jailbreaking process also ACTIVATES the iphone, no need for itunes activation. only fools get that message.

I only give an advice that the owner of the iPhone should consult a technically inclined people to help him solve the iPhone problem, and as usual, insults was the response.

If you check from the original poster's comment, a reasonable reader would deduct that the poster has little technical IT knowledge on solving the current problem and here you are (insulters), giving him online technical asistance that'll confuse him the more. Why don't you tell him to take it to someone who does.

A tool on Cydia on the iClarified package group called DownBB makes it easier to downgrade 02.30 to 02.28 (if you are on BL 5.8 of course).

if you want to come across as a techie, do so without assuming no one else knows anything about anything. your previous post seems to suggest we all dont knwo what we're talking about when most of us were on the iphone haxxing scene since 2007. Logica in particular hops on to iphone IRC channels and talks with the actual devs. i know something or two about electronic circuitry, telecoms and software programming. Texazzpete has been doing ROM flashes and moddings since you were a sperm. so what makes you think we are know-nothings encouraging "Trial and error"?

market your "genuis" if you so wish, but on this forum, in all things iphone, we dont let anyone profit from what is free. anhyone seeking help on any thing iphone need only ask.

if our posts are highly technical, its only to encourage others to do some research and learn the ropes. thats how we learned. if you dont google say "S Gold" or "Bootloader" or "signature checks" you wont really get a full picture of what iphone haxxing is all about.

you may know how to use Ziphone, Iphone PC Suite, Quickpwn etc but thats only because everything was prepackaged for you with nice big round buttons on a kid-friendly GUI. when we were doing Command Line you probably were messisng with dotsis.

Itunes 8.0.2(Latest always better, Easily avail on Apple's site!)

Now Lets start,
First step!
Download and extract QuickPwn in a folder and also download the iphone firmware in the same folder!

Second Step!
Open itunes software and connect iphone to pc, (Install itunes first of all!)

Third Step!
After connect the iphone select your iphone!Press shift button on keyboard and click on Restore button in itunes software!

Fourth Step!
Select the downloaded firmware from the folder!

Fifth Step!
After upgrade the phone via itunes connect the iphone again to pc and open QuickPwn.exe and press blue arrow in the software!

Sixth Step!
Press browse button and select downloaded firmware!

Seventh Step!
After selecting correct files press blue arrow button again!

Eighth Step!
You can now select whether to Add Cydia, Add Installer, or Replace Boot Logos. Select the ones you would like to perform then click the clue arrow button,

Now follow the instructions given by the software!
QuickPwn will now automatically put your iPhone into recovery mode. Once its in recovery mode you will be prompted to: Hold the Home button for 5 seconds, Hold the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds, then release the Power button and continuing holding the Home button until your iPhone is in DFU mode.

For the mannerless here u don't have to use abusive words, Unlocking and jailbreaking are same method, i will post you the do its yourself link to you, the difference is you add bootlog to it during jailbreaking process, and you need to connect the iphone to internet to finished the unlocking in case of a 3g iphone.

Note:Please don't upgrade your iphone to 2.2.1 version because there is no solution for that firmware version!

If you do know how to read, you should have known by now he's already upgraded to 2.2.1 which is the crux of the problem, and the basis of this thread.

Dude, unlocking a 2G phone is different from unlocking a 3G. That's all that needs to be stated for now.
