It sounds like one of the fairy tales, but it is a true story of an undergraduate of Akwa Ibom State University, who was tortured to death by three armed soldiers for wearing green colour.

The tragic incident occurred in Ogba area of the Lagos metropolis.

The victim, Ajayi Ebenezer and his friends were said to be on their way to a suya spot near Ogba bus stop, when the soldiers, in military camouflage uniform allegedly accosted him.

One of his friends, who simply identified himself as Wasiu, told Daily Sun that he was just passing by, on that fateful Saturday, when he saw three soldiers torturing and dragging Ajayi on the ground.

He explained that he tried to inquire from the victim what the problem was, adding that one of the soldiers sternly warned him to leave the scene or be shot.

He said he quickly left spot and saw one of Ajayi’s friends, explaining to sympathizers that the soldiers were torturing him for putting on what looked like army uniform.

According to him, nobody was able to stop the soldiers, as they threatened to shoot anyone that tried to intervene.

He said: “We were watching helplessly, as the soldiers dragged Ajayi to the Area ‘G’ police Command, Ogba. People, especially, women were weeping profusely but no one could assist Ajayi, who was shouting that he was dying.”

Wasiu said he rushed to Ajayi’s house where he briefed members of his family on the development. He said when he and members Ajayi’s family visited the Area ‘G’ command, headquarters, the policemen at the gate told them that he had been released by the soldiers.

But few hours after waiting in vain for his return and after searching for him, they received a shocking news that his dead body was dumped at Oguniyi Road, near Pen Cinema, Agege.

According to him, when they got to the scene, they were informed by some commercial motorcycle operators that they saw some policemen removing a corpse.

To their amazement, when they got to the Pen Cinema police station, they were told that the corpse had been deposited at the mortuary.

Embittered Wasiu said: “ Infact, I am still in shock because I don’t see the basis for killing that boy. That he was putting on what looked like army uniform did not mean he was a criminal.”

Another eyewitness, Ngozi Onwuka, told Daily Sun that she was in vintage position, where she was hawking oranges when she saw the soldiers asking the deceased why he was putting on military uniform . She said as the victim was trying to explain to them that it was not army uniform, the soldiers started beating him.

She said: “They were hitting him with the butt of the gun and at the same time, kicking and dragging him on the ground. I knew the guy would not survive the beating but I am still in shock over the barbaric act.”

When contacted for comments, the Lagos State police spokesman, Mr. Frank Mba, who confirmed the incident said the case was still being investigated.

Absolute madness.

I think Nigeria is approaching the time when God will rain fire and brimstones upon her for these kinds of evil.

My goodness just because man pickin wore a green cloth. During marshall law I don't believe an army would act so barbaric, only in Nigeria do we hear of such stories. If they like your wife they will kill you just to have her, men only God can save us.

Surely, the soldiers aint mad, the guy would have done something. But whatever the case, it shouldn't have resulted in his death.

somebody called Nigerians living in western countries house negros.

Its funny considering that Nigerians living in Nigeria dont have any rights. You can get killed in broad day light by the government, police, soilders, gangs, thieves, ethnic youths etc and thats it.  You can just get arrested and totured 2 death just because a rich person wants it that way. You can get whipped in the streets for no reason.

This incident is shocking but the reaction of Nigerians is more shocking. Crying, cursing and asking God 2 send down fire and brimstone will NOT bring about law and order in Nigeria.

how can you just say for sure they arent mad and how would you know if the guy did something else.

for them, he has already done something by putting on something green enough.

If you know how mad soldiers can get when they see a civillian on something that resembled military uniform then you wouldnt be saying that they arent mad nor say that the guy did something.

I gave them the benefit of doubt. Only people who have issues up in their head would kill someone for something as minor as "wearing their colour".

The fact that there is a culture of that in the military tells me something isn't right. The fact they can kill an unarmed civilian as a result is just, well words escapes me!

Where is the fellow telling me: "Come down to Nigeria and settle down. No matter how much you achieve in America, those Americans will never accept you as one of their own, even though you're a citizen".

If I start slapping people, dem go say I wicked. Go back and be killed by hoodlums in uniform or in suits? At least in America, if that happens (very big if), there WILL be investigations, trials, convictions, and sentencing of the crooks.

Leave America and come settle in Naija? Not visiting o, but settle permanently? I have carried all manner of placards to the White House, protesting the last tyrant in the White House and no soldier or policeman have done anything to me. I've called in many radio shows to condemn so-called big men in U.S. politics and nobody has come knocking at my door asking me why I criticize the "big men". In Nigeria, the place everybody is supposed to love me more than the Americans, the so-called "home is home", criticizing the "big men", those pot-bellied morons that are supposed to serve the populace, would have got me killed off far back. See how they killed this INNOCENT boy, and I'm almost certain NOTHING will happen.

Let me see the next person that will come tell me Americans will never accept me. Let them go and tell the loving Nigerians to stop killing fellow Nigerians, tell them to show that love to the Nigerians in Nigeria.

The Nigerian government is definitely the most USELESS in this world! I say that with zero apology and absolutely no sense of shame. I love Nigeria but hate the entire government! Pathetic! angry

Don't worry, the longer you stay on NL the more you'll be agreeing with me! grin

But seriously, we need to find ways of helping the youths to get out of that country and go live productive lives elsewhere - Ghana, India, Australia, even Liberia is providing opportunities for young people. This whole "Nigeria is your home" mentality is just a tired line. Your home that you'll be killed and NOTHING happens in terms of providing justice is NOT a home. Your home should be where you're appreciated as a human being.

Why is it that the police, soldiers, politicians, criminals, moving vehicles, falling trees, collapsing buildings, roads, nurses, doctors, electricity, postal service, banks, schools, customs service and teachers seem to appreciate me more in America than in my home? My home that thousands have been deliberately killed by police, soldiers, bad roads, etc.

I understand your frustration and that of other Nairalanders, but the bad leaders want us all to run away, that way they will become even more powerful. I think they need to be challenged but in creative ways. For example the power is with the locals, if they get together and cooperate they could install secret CCTVs to document this brutality - they could even use their mobile phones collectively. The footage could then be used against the soldiers and if no action is taken, the footage can be posted on Youtube for the world to see. The overall effect would be to remove the "invisibility" of the perpetrators.
