This morning Niger Dock sacks 1400 staffers of Nigerian origin. A friend of mine who works there just called that the company pasted their (Nigerian Staffers) names on the front gate of the company as the gate is under lock and key.

It is so sad to see how far Nigerdock has fallen. I spent a good part of my childhood on their island. It was the best run parastatal in Nigeria, i make no bones about it. Then, there were not that many expatriates and they actually built and repaired boats. The boat and ferry in use then were created by the engineers there. No dichotomy between expatriates and Nigerians (only between junior and senior staff).

It's sad.

It's indeed a fall from grace to grass. It used to be a very reputable and accountable company. It was working very well and there wasn't any separation between Nigerians and other foreign nationals.

My secondary school is on that Island. I've got friends working there at the moment. I've got to put through some calls. Very worrisome news.

The more I read these depressing sacking news the more resolute I become with my desire to have multiple streams of income; working and depending solely on one source of income is a great risk. While being an employee gives a form of fake security, it actually just postpones the doomsday.

I pray the relevant authorities look into these ugly trends and do something about it.
