These are not the best of times for Jumia, a Nigerian online shopping site which retails a wide range of products from electronics and households to fashion, kiddies’ items and lots more. The company recently hit by cash crunch, dwindling patronage and subtle internal managerial unrest has sacked 250 of its workforce with a majority of the remaining employees compelled to take a pay cut (*reportedly 20% pay cut)

Jumia staff kept sealed lips over the matter but our investigations showed that the decision to lay off staff was inevitable as the retail firm had been running on shoe strings in recent months after it made waves in its early days. Wikipedia, the internet encyclopedia put total Jumia staff strength at 1800.

In any case, if this is genuine, that is around 30% of Jumia’s 1000-man solid workforce in Nigeria. Jumia has not remarked on the firings and has yet to discharge an official articulation with respect to this; though still expecting an official release. According to TechCabal “but we have reached out to them and expect a comment.”

One of the inquiries observers on this side of the table are asking is for what good reason is Jumia scaling down and the motivation behind why it has done as such in the way being supposed.

Yet not officially confirmed the firings, a considerable measure point to the way that this may be valid. For one, the methodology in which the terminating was supposed to have been done (and the scale as well) is consistent with Rocket Internet’s script on cutting back.

Rocket Internet – the lion’s share financial specialist in Jumia – with the Samwer Brothers at the steerages have been known to hire and fire spontaneously. In one of numerous comparable activities, Rocket Internet shut some of its workplaces in Turkey in 2012, terminating 400 specialists simultaneously. Much closer home, in the meantime this story is making the rounds in Nigeria.

Hiring and Firing without prior warning been acknowledged as one of the numerous eccentricities of right on time stage new companies.

“The line administrators were devices to sustain the demonstrations, and the final blow would be the point at which the line chief gets fired after he had fired the other staff, I witnessed this in promoting and HR while I arrived,” writes the OP, JU, a previous Jumia worker.

One of the more evident reasons Jumia will be slicing occupations is to diminish smolder rate. Which bodes well in light of the fact that Jumia has yet to turn in profit since it started operations in Nigeria in 2012 regardless of a $200 million financing funding chest?

Obviously, it’s one and only of numerous Rocket Internet portfolio organizations that are yet to do as such. Maybe the mothership in Germany is as of now getting fretful with the Nigerian group which is confronting steep development focuses on a humble spending plan.

Seriously, government need to come in and make business in Nigeria easy (how can you justify $200m spending and no result). Some of these retrenching can be controlled if businesses are enjoying some protection from government. The allegations of Econet owner against some government officials come to mind, I won't be surprised if some of the allegations he made are still on till now. Corruption is still d cause and more unemployment is the effect.

JUMIA invited me for interview on two separate occasions and I turned them down. I applied for a Security Analyst position and I knew I was one of the best candidates for the job. I didn't attend the first interview and offered no excuses for that. Surprisingly, they reshuduled the interview and I still did not show. After reading about them online, I made up my mind to back out completely. The company couldnt have sustained my long term goals.

2 years is too short to expect returns on this kind of business.. It's not easy running a retail delivery business in this country. Don't laugh at them. If businesses like Jumia fails, then we are back to the stone age in Nigeria.

Jumia was a trailblazer. Just like MTN. Encourage businesses..

When last did any commentator here can afford what they want. The disposable income has gone south for an average Nigeria. They should convert to physical store like shoprite.
