Rivers State Governorship Election and the Nation

The outcome of the case at the Rivers State Election Petition Tribunal nullifying the election of Nyesom Wike is very significant, not only for Rivers State, but for the whole of our nation. Now, I’m not going to analyse the legalities of the case or say whether or not the Tribunal is right or wrong to reach the verdict it did. I’ll leave that to the appeal process and the lawyers and the judges involved already and those yet to be involved. However, what I want to deal with here is the politics of it all.

Looked at from the prism of the political battle going on between Nyesom Wike and Rotimi Amaechi, there are those who would say the judgment is a political attempt by the APC to claim Rivers State through the courts. In other word, they would be saying what the APC could not win via the ballot, they want to win through some questionable court process. While a parallel could be drawn with the Amaechi case about eight years ago which led to the Supreme Court giving him the governorship without him actually being on the ballot, the difference here is that we are talking two different political parties and a lot of bad blood and bad politics already.

As a matter of fact, in all honesty, you do not need to carry out any scientific poll to see that the PDP owns Rivers State politically, despite Amaechi’s attempt to tilt it to the APC. Not many people in the streets believe that APC actually won the governorship election. Indeed, whatever anyone says of Wike, his hold on the governorship election was quite obvious all over the state long before the election itself. Honestly, most Rivers State people today are not looking to see an APC government after any rerun election (if it happens); they are convinced that no matter how many times the election is held, Wike would win.

And that is the problem. We need to call on all parties to not act in desperation. Wike should appeal the decision and await the outcome. He remains the Governor until the appeal process is exhausted and must be given the respect his person and office deserve while that process is on. If it comes to a rerun, the APC should go round to do its homework and security must be provided all over the state to ensure that no party uses intimidation to keep members of one party from voting the candidate of their choice. Despite all we know about Wike, there’s noting that says the APC cannot win if it campaigns diligently and cashes in savvily on the advantage of being the party at the centre, including marshalling huge national material and human resources towards winning the election. However, what it cannot do is to use state institutions like the INEC and the security services under its control to “win” the election. It certainly must not be seen to be using the judiciary to illegitimately achieve the same purpose. That would be inviting Armageddon in Nigeria. It would be waking up the beast that we have intelligently tamed the moment President Goodluck Jonathan conceded defeat. As sad as it is, the regionally and ethnically poisoned nature of our politics means that any attempt for the APC to claim any state in the South-South today will be resisted fiercely by those traditional forces that believe the South-South is solidly PDP. Desperation could tilt this into seriously dangerous territory.

I therefore call on President Muhammau Buhari, Rotimi Amaechi, Dakuku Peterside and Nyesom Wike to consider the nation above their own personal interest in this matter. They must show that they truly respect the people by allowing the rule of law to prevail. Every Nigerian would be watching what happens in Rivers State keenly and the core thing here is that violence must not be allowed to mar the issue going forward from here. If that happens, the Nigerian people will hold these men individually and collectively responsible.

hypocrisy at its highest peak. Turn Nigeria into what!!!!! Go and check out what Obasanjo did to the opposition when he entered. He coerced and gave chairman of opposition party a ministerial appointment and one by one forced all other AD governors to join PDP. What do u think brought the much talked about allocation withdrawal of lagos allocation. Because Tinubu created local government without his endorsement. We re tired of PDP both in south or East. Apc can take the whole country it is not a new thing. PDP laid precedent long ago.

It is no longer a secret to all and sundry that Buhari is playing with fire even as some people that should've have seen the handwriting on the wall but yet chooses to play politics with everything including those diehard APC supporters whose covetous move to grab rivers state wasn't a hidden agenda from the public right from the word go - let it be on record that it was APC supporters under the tutelage of Amaechi that started the politics of bitterness and violence in Rivers state and the old PDP order in the state simply stepped up the game and of course the result was overwhelming before and during the election because a particular mindset was born and this mindset was simple : you can't hound Jonathan in the North , betray and reject him in the South West and the Middle Belt and now you want to use some disgruntled PDP members to achieve a violent take over in the South South and this was what gave birth to the election violence in Rivers State which both side was a culprit but when the overwhelming grassroot force of the PDP came calling they scurried away and fought tooth and nail to ensure that the election was cancelled and when they couldn't achieve their demonic aim they hijacked the tribunal sitting to Abuja where Buhari who said "I belong to nobody and belong to everyone" and his co travelers would be able to manipulate the outcome which we witnessed yesterday and even right now their next game plan is to intimidate the people's Governor with security operatives and the bastardized EFCC but that woud be the last straw that would break the camel's back.

If anyone thinks that the APC will take Rivers State through the backdoor then let them also know that the politics of arm twisting and blackmail would be met with a dirtier politics of sabotage and bloodbath . Ordinarily one would expect the old man to concentrate resources in the North East which is now a hot bed for terrorist groups and criminal enterprises but here he is wanting to start another trouble in a region where there is already a rising voice of disaffection over the structure of the country and a serious call by a pro Biafra group that is becoming bolder by the day.

Buhari is playing a dangerous game that won't be at the interest of the peaceful coexistence of this nation at large. The struggle not to lose Rivers State to the APC isn't just about Wike alone , it isn't about one man's ambition and it isn't about the PDP anymore but the people themselves and if they are basing their ill conceived plan on Jonathan's easy bow even with all the irregularities then they are making a mistake because to an average Rivers man the APC clearly represents oppression and like every oppressed people we will reject the APC peacefully at the polls and if we notice any form of arm twisting and intimidation like his blind supporters are suggesting right before our eyes ,we will create another North East for Buhari let's see what becomes of his lopsided Governance in three years and the already ailing economy .
Rivers State is PDP's birthright and we will do anything to keep it that way by any means necessary.

You may be right, but diplomacy is the much needed ingredient here. Obj did it don't mean PMB should. Else what change is he preaching.
He should as well help the citizens of Rivers to thumbprint their ballot nau...if he is that desperate and unveil his real self because many people are earnestly awaiting it.
