Here we are in Edo State, and what are the best soups we can eat? The local cuisines are some of the best the country can ever offer its guests. There are a lot of indigenous foods that have their variations according to the place and culture of the people of the Edo. These meals that we have selected are only found well prepared in this state. Bini Owo Soup Bini Owo Soup was named after a town called, Owo. This soup has become one of the oldest foods that are eaten in Edo State. We have a lot of soups in Nigeria that are prepared with vegetables like fluted pumpkin or spinach but unlike Owo Soup, that is prepared with potash. Potash is something that we rarely find in Nigerian soups. You may end up calling it stew especially when you eat the one that is served with yam or unripe plantain rather than pounded yam or eba. Black Soup (Omoebe) People say that Omoebe is the most popular food in the state. The colour of the soup is black which is where the name of the soup comes from. It is a tasty and delicious soup that is prepared with spices and local herbs. The vegetable that is used are scent leaf and bitter leaf which produce the black colours when they are grounded. You can order for this soup in different parts of the state. Omi Ukpoka (Corn soup) The corn soup that is popularly called Omi Ukpoka that is common among the Afemai people. It is made with dry corn that is grounded, different herbs like African nutmeg, uziza and uda and smoked fish. The aroma is unique and inviting. If you are on diet, you should not think of tasting Omi Ukpoka because it is high in carbohydrate content. Omisagwe (groundnut soup) There is another part of the country where you can find a soup like Omisagwe, the northern part of the country where they serve Miyan Taushe and there is also an Asian sauce called Satay Sauce that tastes like this soup too.It is made with onion and tomato as the base, groundnuts and you can add beef, chicken or fish to it. |
