A socio-political group, the Better Enugu Youths Assembly, BEYA, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for appointing Mr. Geoffrey Onyema as minister, adding that the appointment has highlighted the seriousness of the President in building a crack team that will afford Nigerians the change they voted for.

In a statement signed by its President, Mr. Nnamdi Ugwuanyi, on Tuesday, BEYA opined that, “it smacks of self-centeredness and myopia for some aggrieved politicians in Enugu State, particularly those of the APC, to fault Onyema’s appointment on the ground that the nominee purportedly played no role in the electoral victory of the President.

“We wonder how the President would have named any of them minister when they were already fighting themselves for the slot. The question such politicians should answer in earnest is how significance their supposed role was in President Buhari’s victory in the March 28 election, when allegations of embezzlement of campaign funds and other anti-party activities were bandied within their rank.”


The group however applauded the Senate, particularly the three senators from Enugu State, for ensuring a smooth ministerial confirmation of Onyema, who it observed, “is bound to be a shining star in the new Federal Executive Council.”

BEYA explained that its, “confidence on the ability of Onyema to stand out among the lot is derived from the very impressive profile; experience, contacts and carriage he will be bringing to Buhari’s cabinet.”

“To this end, we are calling on the President to take advantage of the international exposure, worldview and academic qualifications of the Enugu nominee by making him the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

“Considering that Onyema, aside rising through the ranks in the World Intellectual Property Organization, is fluent in the English, French and German languages make him the most qualified among the ministers-designate to head the Foreign Affairs ministry,” BEYA stated.
