Armed robbers kill merchant in Gbongan

By Tunde Odesola, Osogbo 12-05-09 tribune

A merchant (name withheld) has been killed in Gbongan community of Osun State less than 12 hours after he identified two armed robbery suspects.

Investigation by our correspondent on Monday showed that the trader had expressed surprise when he saw two known faces among the gang of robbers that attacked his residence last week.

A source said he had pleaded with the known faces not to rob him even as he allegedly threatened to expose them if they failed to heed his plea.

After the robbery, the deceased allegedly went to Gbongan Police Station, where he lodged a complaint about the robbery.

Policemen, who accompanied him to the scene of the robbery, later went with him to arrest some of those he (deceased) alleged as being connected with the robbery.

The suspects arrested were taken to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Osogbo, where they were interrogated.

The merchant was killed in his residence by unknown gunmen, who stormed his house at midnight.

Bullets riddled his gate, doors, ceiling and walls during the killers' invasion of his residence.

Police Public Relations Officer, Osun State Command, Mr. Olabode Akinola, on Monday, said that investigation had commenced on the case.

He added that the police will crack the riddle surrounding the killing.

The moral of this story is that when in Nigeria, one must NEVER look armed robbers in the eye while they are ministering to their clients, and if one does look up, NEVER should one allow a flash of recognition to cross ones face.   If the above two cardinal sins are committed, and one is left alive my some miracle of tactical omission, then a police report must NEVER, under any circumstances, be lodged,  unless one is hellbent on using up that third and final lucky break of the day or night.
