I don't even know how to think the one child policy
Is it 1 woman to one child, or one man to one child, or one couple to one child?

It will not work..
Start by making polygamy and children born out of wedlock punishable by law..

If not... We will have too many dysfunctional family setting everywhere, One child at home and 14 in the streets

Thats is the work of the government. Illegitimate children exist even in europes most advanced economies and scandinavian countries. Social infrastructure must be put in place by the government.

It will only work when you give people incentives when they obey the policy, offer them free healthcare in old age and have a proper elderly care system in place.

It can't work in nation where it is sanctioned by the Govt. for men to marry more than one woman based on religious and cultural differences.

It can only work when you totally change the skewed system on which Nigeria was built on else nothing will work in this country.

The problem in Nigeria is quite different from dat in China.. The one child programme came up becos the wanted to reduce their population. But the case in Nigeria is different.. If every Nigerian can afford to take care of hw many children the want I don't see any reason why we should follow China . That policy doesn't allow the only christains to fulfil their goals.. Go into the world and multiply..

Nairaland and ignorance. Have you asked what the policy was really about before making comments? It was never the main thing about the population control policy. It was just a tiny part out of a much broader population control policy and just so you know some rural farming communities were allowed more than one child.

Corruption was rife and people most times had more than one child by claiming they just emigrated to china, register the death of an existing kid and so on. In short, the so called one child policy people shout their voice about failed miserably.

The basic and main part of the other policies that actually worked was the increase in reproduction health training, mass literacy, mass production of condoms to prevent unwanted pregnancies, Government sponsored abortion clinics and so on.

Incentives for guys who go for vasectomy or ladies who enrol in family planning activities.

Implement this and see a drastic drop in our population. The vast majority of kids we have in Nigeria are from unwanted pregnancies from teenagers and those who don't know the importance of condoms. Increase the availability of condoms for free. Make other forms of family planning available and see wonders. Not some stupid rule about a family having only a single child.
