My Neighbours Are Berating Me For Promoting My Language. by adonbilivit: 9:00pm On Nov 14, 2015
fellow nairalanders, please air your views on how I should revive my ego that has been bruised by my neighbours. I am a Nigerian, an Igbo guy and I am proud of it. We Nigerians, particularly the Igbos, possess this annoying habit of speaking English amongst ourselves. This, in my opinion, is due to low self esteem and, to say the list, an embarrassment to our forefathers. How could we be endangering our language? Is speaking English the sole yardstick for measuring one's learnedness? just this night, one asked me " are u sure u went to school"...this particular statement propelled me to create this thread.
Now I am being tempted to join them in "killing" my language because they have innumerably berated me due to the fact that I speak Igbo all the way when conversing and/or arguing with them. Now they have the belief, based on the condescending statements they make pertaining my literacy, that I am a dullard that spent four years in the university but can't even make a sentence in English. truth is, these people have never heard me speak English and I intentionally made it so because I have always thought that I have nothing to prove, but now I am feeling otherwise

so what do you suggest folks? should I keep speaking undiluted Igbo to them despite the perception they have about me?
