Indonesia has announced a moratorium on executions.

Indonesian presidential chief of staff Luhut Panjaitan made the announcement, saying the country needs to focus on fixing its economy.

The decision comes seven months after the execution of convicted Australian drug traffickers Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran.

The announcement was welcomed by those who had campaigned on behalf of Chan and Sukumaran to end the death penalty.

In September, the lead lawyer for Chan and Sukumaran predicted the economic woes from the executions may lead Indonesia to introduce a moratorium.
In the lead up to the executions, Indonesian president Joko Widodo was quietly advised by some prominent Indonesians of the damage using the death penalty could cause to relations with countries such as Australia, Holland, France and Brazil.

Many Australians also vowed to boycott Indonesia as a tourist destination.

Indonesia's economic growth has been below five per cent for the last two quarters this year. However, the reasons behind today's announcement are not yet clear.

Indonesia was quick to forget that the world is a global village, and not one man army fronts.

Indonesia must not buckle to the pressures from countries who have themselves been unable to rid their society of drug crimes.

The death penalty must be sustained to ensure stubborn criminals are found another world where they can operate without ruining lives.
