Civil Society Seeks Immediate Suspension Of CCT Chairman

The Civil Society Network Against Corruption (CSNAC) on Monday, November 23 2015, demanded the immediate suspension of Danladi Umar, the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) over various allegations leveled against him.

CSNAC, a civil society organization said it will be irresponsible for Umar to preside over any case, particularly corruption cases at the tribunal until the conclusion of his investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The CCT chairman is currently undergoing investigation by the anti-graft agency for demanding a N10 million bribe from a retired Comptroller of Customs, Rasheed Taiwo, who is being prosecuted at the CCT for allegedly failing to declare his assets while in office.

When Taiwo reported this demand to the commission, he was advised to play along which led to the payment of N1.8 million to Umar through his Personal Assistant, Ali Gambo.

Also, three staff of the tribunal were transferred out of Abuja under controversial circumstances. They include the accountant and two administrative officers namely Shotunde Adeyinka, Lucky Eronlan and Johnson Owopetu. They were transferred to Ondo, Bauchi and Katsina states respectively.

The trio petitioned the EFCC on the corrupt practices of Mr. Umar where they copied the Presidency, CCT, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the National Judicial Council (NJC), the Senate, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Attorney General of the Federation in their petition.

Also listed were a barrage of corruption allegations, including awarding contracts without due process, making full contract payments to contractors instead of mobilization fees, dysfunctional appointments and promotion without board approval or regards to federal character.

Although Mr. Umar shunned the invitation of the EFCC twice, he finally honored it and is still yet to be resolved.Meanwhile, on Thursday, November 20 2015, a petition was received at the senate against the CCT chairman.

The petition was raised by Senator Obinna Ogba representing Ebonyi state, and alleged corruption and abuse of office.

The matter was referred to the Senate committee on ethics, privileges and public petitions to report back in two weeks.
