President Muhammadu Buhari; a national leader, All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; and the Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, have urged the people of Bayelsa State to vote for Timipre Sylva in Saturday’s governorship poll.

They spoke during the grand finale of the APC campaign which was held at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex, Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, on Tuesday.

The mega rally, which saw the temporary movement of the machinery of the Federal Government and the APC National Working Committee to Yenagoa, locked down the state capital.

The rally had in attendance Vice President Yemi Osinbajo (representing President Buhari); the APC’s National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun; former interim chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande; Senator Heineken Lokpobiri; Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal; and a former governor of Ekiti State, Segun Oni.

Others were former Managing Director, Niger Delta Development Commission, Timi Alaibe; Mr. Peterside Dakuku; Senator Magnus Abe; State Chairman, APC, Tiwei Orunimighe, and a host of other party bigwigs.

Specifically, Buhari told Bayelsa populace that the APC would bring a new era of peace and prosperity to Bayelsa State.

The President said, “The time for change, prosperity, good governance has come to Bayelsa. So, Bayelsa people should not miss the train of change.

“Bayelsa State deserves a pride of place among other states in Nigeria. We must do the right thing in the APC to show that we are a party of change.”

He urged them to go out en masse and cast their votes for the APC and its governorship candidate, Sylva.

Buhari, who expressed confidence that Sylva would win the poll, promised the people of the state that Sylva government would provide jobs, ensure progress, prosperity and unprecedented development.

On his part, Tinubu, who described the PDP as ‘Poverty Development Party,’ said for 16 years under the leadership of the PDP, the country was in the wilderness.

He urged the Bayelsa electorate to vote Sylva to liberate them from bad governance and to ensure accelerated development of the state.

Tinubu said, “On Saturday, go and vote and make sure you defend your votes. They are already afraid of you, because you are already the masters. Sylva is back; he has bounced back. His winning lies with you. After you have voted on that day, do not go home. Stay there and they should count the ballot in your presence. Do not leave it for the agents; shine your eyes properly.

“To get freedom, it is not served free of charge. You must protect your votes. Your votes are your freedom from poverty, unemployment, bad government, among other ills.”

In his remarks, Oshiomhole said the APC was unanimous that with Sylva on the driver’s seat, the APC would win the poll by a landslide.

He said Bayelsa is unarguably one of the most endowed states in the country, but lamented that development had eluded the state because of misgovernance.

“We need change in Bayelsa. We must refuse to be like a fish in the river without water to drink,” Oshiomhole said.

On his part, Sylva said his government, when elected, would be people-centred, noting that development could not take place at the expense of the people of Bayelsa.

He said his government would empower the people by providing the dividends of democracy, good governance, regular payment of salaries of workers and pensions, among others.

He lamented the rampant rate of kidnapping, hunger and crimes in the state, promising that his government would abolish hunger and poverty and that people would have a sense of belonging.

The highlight of the event was the receipt of 23 defectors, including serving commissioners, special advisers and local government chairmen that moved to the APC.

On receiving them, Odigie-Oyegun lauded their courage for jumping into the “winning ship.” He said he was happy that they had realised on time that they were formerly in darkness and had now moved into the light.
