2009 Corolla Tranny Issue......Solved by oNj(m): 10:43pm On Dec 07, 2015
My auto tranny (09 Corolla) is at the verge ocollapse.
It all started when I noticed the car wasn't shifting to the last gear (4 speed automatic transmission, I think). Later on the check light came on and the code was P0977.
Upon inspection, I discovered that the socket to the transmission cable that goes into the tranny has water in it, a broken "leg" and another shaky leg still. How it all happened, I don't know.

Got a (gear box)mechanic to do the cable replacement.
Now the problem: after the replacement the reverse gear doesn't enagage.

Please help

did u ensure mechanic replaced with appropriate cable and plug? What codes can u pull now. Maybe, he did not align the transmission range sensor well.

Was the harness replacement done correctly. How did he get another harness and was it the same as what originally came with the car. Colour matching is important for this nature of work

The cables looked pretty the same. No codes now.
I'll mention the range sensor to him today.

My biggest fear is whether he actually plugged each end of the cable to the appropriate socket (solenoid I think)

He should replacement with the exact one that came with the car. He should also check the gear solenoid.

Let him check the gear selector cable

Yes he did.
Re: 2009 Corolla Tranny Issue......Solved by oNj(m): 7:14am On Dec 08, 2015
When he unplugged the cable, the gears would shift (including the reverse), though in a rough way.
Could this point to something he wasn't doing right?

Yes he did.

If he did let him go back and check that connection properly. As a matter of fact let him return the old harness and check d result and comparr it to what's going on now

Thanks cartalk family. The problem is solved.
Part of the wahala came from using the wrong harness (wasn't exactly the one for the tranny. His solution: cut part of the original harness and join to the new one. result: he confused at two of the sockets. End result: erratic behavior and reverse not engaging.)

Went and sourced for the exact cable myself which he used for the replacement.

Finally it worked.... Thanks to God

Kukuma changed the ATF( Toyota ATF WS).

car moves well now

Well... Depends on what exactly is the issue with your car.
1. Rattling noise at cold start is a known issue with 2009/2010 model. Doesn't necessarily mean the engine is nearing death. In fact mine runs smooth since after changing the camshaft gear.
Got the gear online but I think tokumbo one from either 2011/2012 model should work fine (the problem was corrected in that version of the engine).

2. You may need to create a thread for your tranny to explain what exactly led to your issues now. There are capable/willing hands here to help you out.

My issue was particularly about connecting the solenoid end of the tranny harness the correct way. Once that was done, the problem was solved.

Mayowa ..09051362426.... He's in Zuba

There's also another good tranny specialist I encountered when I was looking for tranny harness(got it from him when I couldn't get it elsewhere). He's also in Zuba, after College of Education(don't have his contact)

Hi
I am noticing the same brief rattling noise on cold start ups intermittently.

My online research says change camshaft gear.Is it a complex procedure? Are you in Eko?

Yes, camshaft gear is the culprit.

"Is it a Complex procedure"? I'll say not quite. I fixed mine then after searching the internet extensively for guide.

Your main challenge will be sourcing the camshaft gear.... I bought the updated version from eBay then when this dollar crises and lockdown were not there. Getting a used one (App/Zuba/Gudu) is another route but there's no way of telling if it's also affected by it.

You might opt to continue using yours the way it is and endure the annoying sound. ...Some are of the opinion that it doesn't pose any danger to the engine

I hear some mechanics "fix" the issue by welding the gear; not quite the solution cos it effectively changes the engine from "Variable valve" to "fixed valve".... Your "check light" will be permanently on.... And You'll lose the fuel economy of variable valve.

Thanks for your illuminating response.
I have read up on the issue and I am convinced that it may pose a danger to the engine in the long term so I would definitely fix it.

I am going to try ebay too.If you could help me with the I can source the exact one.

Buying a used one may not be smart just like you said.

PS. Did you say you fixed it yourself?

TSB 0087-09 tells what parts and part-numbers for the job.

I fixed it myself following a very detailed procedure I saw online.... Can't quite remember the website.

Just saw this video on same issue....
