Prospective smartphone buyers and many smartphone owners usually see a lot of specifications about phones they intend to purchase or already have but have no idea what they mean so I have compiled this list of the most commonly used smartphone specifications and their full meanings. GSM – Global System for Mobile Communications HSPA – High Speed Packet Access LTE – Long Term Evolution HSDPA - High-Speed Downlink Packet Access WCDMA - Wideband code division multiple access 1G,2G, 3G, 4G, 5G – First Generation, Second Generation, Third Generation, Fourth Generation, Fifth Generation mobile networks respectively GPRS - General Packet Radio Service EDGE – Enhanced GPRS NFC – Near Field Communication VPN - Virtual Private Network AMOLED - Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode TFT – Thin Film Transistor Capacitive Touchscreen- This type of touchscreen display uses the electrical properties of the human body know where and when a user touches the display thus it can be controlled with very light touches of a finger but cannot be operated with a touch device e.g S-Pen stylus. Resistive Touchscreen - This type of display has several layers separated by thin spaces. Whenever pressure is applied to the display using a finger or stylus, the layers touch and the electrical circuit tells the device the point the user touched. They are less responsive than capacitive touchscreens due to the extra pressure needed. Pixels – Picture Element: It is the basic unit of a picture on a screen. Ppi – Pixels per Inch: This refers to the number Pixels per inch, i.e. the pixel density of devices. UI – User Interface OS – Operating System Dual Core, Quad-Core, Hexa Core, Octa – core Processors; These are Processors with Two Cores, Four Cores, Six Cores and Eight Cores respectively. GPU – Graphics Processing Unit Chipset – this is an integrated circuit which controls the flow of data between the processor, memory and peripherals CPU – Central Processing Unit MP - Mega Pixel – 1 million pixels so 16 MP = 16 Million Pixels RAM – Random Access Memory OIS - Optical image stabilization: technology which stabilizes the image recorded by a camera by varying the optical path to the sensor Autofocus – camera hardware which allows for automatic or manual focusing on a selected area LED flash – Light Emitting Diode Flash Geo-tagging - is the process of adding geographical identification to various types of media Touch Focus – technology which allows users select which part of the image the camera should focus by touching the object in the camera viewer face detection – Technology which can identify human faces in digital images Auto HDR – Automatic High Dynamic Range imaging Panorama – refers to wide-angle view photos Dual-video recording – Recording two videos simultaneously with both front and back cameras Dual video call – Video call using both cameras Wi-Fi – Wireless Fidelity Wi-Fi Direct - Wi-Fi standard which enables devices easily connect with each other and share files via Wi-Fi, this is the technology apps such as Xender and Flashshare use. a wireless access point. Wi-Fi Hotspot - A hotspot is a physical location which provides internet access over a wireless network MPEG - Moving Picture Experts Group MP3 - MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 Audio Layer III WAV- Waveform audio format Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac – Wireless Network Standards and frequencies A2DP - Advanced Audio Distribution Profile - controls music streaming from a mobile phone to wireless Bluetooth headphone apt-X - is a type of audio codec compression algorithm GPS - Global Positioning System A-GPS - Assisted GPS GLONASS – Globalnaya Navigazionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema or Global Navigation Satellite System, It is Russia's version of GPS BDS - BeiDou Navigation Satellite System, it is the Chinese GPS system USB Host:it is also called USB On-The-Go and allows USB devices e.g. USB flash drives, digital cameras to be connected to enabled mobile phones and other devices. SpO2 sensors : means Peripheral capillary oxygen saturation sensor. It gives an estimation of the oxygen saturation level MMS: Mutimedia Messaging Service Push Mail - Push email is an email system which makes your mailbox on your mobile device be active at all times to receive mail. IM – Instant Messaging HTML5 – Hyper Text Markup Language 5- Is the language used in Internet Browsers Java - means the device supports Applications Programmed using the Java Programming language Wireless charging Qi/PMA -Qi and Power Matters Alliance companies standards for wireless charging ANT+ support - ANT+ allows for data from different sensors to be used in an interoperable manner. Cloud storage - Cloud storage is technology which allows digital data to be stored in logical pools.
