ABORTION FOCUS: CHILD OR MOTHER, WHO'S IN DANGER?
(UNSPOKEN DANGERS OF ABORTION)

By Bandoh Emmy Chi

Aborted babies are not in danger, or at least not in the type of danger you think. Women who are involved in abortions are the ones in more danger, unquantifiable danger at that.
Whenever abortion is mentioned, the first reaction people give away physically and vocally is anger, anger that another innocent child has been murdered. This maybe is because of the way we are wired, that belief mostly stems from either the African tradition or our religious beliefs.
Abortion is the deliberate termination of a pregnancy, usually before the embryo or fetus is capable of independent life. In medical contexts, this procedure is called induced abortion.
There are dangers associated with this medical procedure which are often not talked about as much as they are supposed to be, hence necessitates this piece.
In Nigeria, abortion remains illegal which makes it impossible to study the situation. Using United States of America where abortion was legalised through the supreme Court's ruling in 1973, it's ruling was based on the fact that abortion was 'relatively safe', there have been many studies into the after effects of abortion since then to prove otherwise.
There are two common side effects associated with abortion, namely; Physical, and psychological effects.
The common physical effects includes excessive bleeding, infections, Perforated uterus, bowel, or bladder, Incompetent cervix, scaring, sterility, breast cancer, Complications from anesthesia and most scaring is ectopic pregnancy or worse death!
Psychological effects are most times seen as emotional effects. It is common that at least most women experience one negative reaction to abortion, such as sorrow, grief, regret or disappointment. Some examples of this effect are depression and anxiety, Substance Abuse, relationship and sexual difficulties, Smoking, suicide, repeated abortion, Post-Abortion Stress Syndrome and more.
Let's look at few of these effects and how dangerous they are to women; Ectopic pregnancy: Abortion increases the risk of subsequent ectopic pregnancies (pregnancy that develops outside the uterus, most often in the fallopian tubes). Ectopic pregnancies, in turn, are life-threatening and may reduce fertility.
Perforated uterus, bowel, or bladder: Abortion instruments can puncture abdominal organs, requiring emergency surgery to repair the damage. Occasionally perforation requires removal of the uterus (hysterectomy).
Relationship and Sexual Difficulties: At least seven documented studies report that women who have had one or more abortions are significantly more likely to have shorter relationships and more divorce. Moreover, 30-50% post-abortive women experience difficulties in subsequent relationships, including aversion to men, aversion to sex, painful intercourse, and promiscuity.
Repeat Abortions: Among women having abortions in the United States, about one-half have already had a prior abortion. Abortion places a woman at higher risk for another abortion.
Death: Recent statistics from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) report fewer than one death per 100,000 legal abortions due to complications. Though rare, abortion can directly cause death as the result of bleeding, infection, organ damage, or other complications.
Now, if with the advancement of technology in the USA and coupled with the fact that abortion is legal women still face grave danger, then what becomes of Nigeria where it is illegal and filled with quacks trying to make quick money? The reality of abortions is that the side effects may not be immediate, it may even take 5 or 10 years to manifest. For instance incompetent cervix, this becomes a problem when the woman decides to have a wanted pregnancy, the womb finds it difficult to hold it and often leads to miscarriages. Then we see them running to doctors and prayer houses for miracles, right?
The People Newspaper (01/11/’92), reported the traumatic story of a young woman who underwent an abortion at the British Pregnancy Advisory Services Clinic in Liverpool, only to give birth to her supposedly aborted baby 48 hours later. The woman said that she held the tiny baby in her hands before collapsing in distress. “I’ll never forget holding that tiny thing – I felt like I was playing God. I was hysterical”, she told reporters. The woman claims that she had wanted to keep the baby but counsellors “pressurised” her into believing that “termination would be best” after she told them the baby’s father had left them.
I ask you sincerely, what is your excuse for wanting abortion?
Do you know that abortion has been confirmed to be more risky than childbirth?
Do you think your excuse is worth you hurting yourself and in the same process brutally murdering a child i presume innocent?
Think again! The consequences are long lasting and destructive.
Women are in danger, not just the child. Be sure before you slaughter your baby along with yourself.
