Please find out how much BP was fined for the oil spill in USA. What I expect MTN to do is to request for payment over 3 years. Do you know how much MTN makes in a day? They can pay that fine.

BP's fine is just around 5% of total value of the company. Mtn's fine is more than 80% of the total value of the company. Now do you understand why mtn's fine is unreasonable?

How much does mtn make in a day and what is their daily operational expenses? You cannot look at revenues without looking at cost of operation.

If have you an idea of the annual profit of mtn, and I can authoritatively tell u, that if mtn remains profitable for the next three years...this fine will gulp their entire profits. So is that sensible? How do u expect them to pay salaries, keep network working, expand the network, introduce new technologies etc....common people. You all are arguing from an emotional point of view. Let's all apply logic!

DEAR NCC

I HAVE AN MTN LINE AND I AM AN MTN CUSTOMER.

BUT PLEASE

IF YOUR REGULATIONS/GUIDELINES STATE CLEARLY THAT WHETHER A CASE IS IN COURT OR NOT YOU HAVE THE POWERS TO ENFORCE SANCTIONS ON ANY LICENSEE OR LESSEE, PENDING WHEN THE COURT ARRIVES AT A JUDGEMENT

THEN PLEASE SANCTION THESE XENOPHOBES WHO HAVE NO RESPECT FOR NIGERIA.

PLEASE DO NOT MIND SWITCHING TO GLO OR ANY OTHER OPTION. I AM EVEN ROAMING AND IT COSTS ME MORE.

What is the MTN guy talking about customers should not panick.
Who is panicking? Please NCC do not be afraid to deal with these people who feel Nigeria is a lawless country.
Just like some oil companies and banks drive against traffic in their convoys.

Speak for yourself bro.
Why should I hate MTN when they are the best and most consistent network in Nigeria?
The Glo sub I'm using right now is so frustrating, that I'm wondering when they'll be fined too.
MTN Edge/2G is faster than Glo's 3G, and you're telling me MTN is evil.
Airtel charges double rates for data, and we don't hate them yet.

I'm still wondering how these same networks that are horrible with their few subscribers will absorb even more customers should MTN close down.

Even if MTN finance 15% of 2016 budget, naa who go finance 2017 own. Etisalat,GE,Unilever,BAT,Maersk,Huawei and co,watch your backs, they say there is a new sheriff in town but like the old Wild West ,intoxication was one of the problems even law enforcers faced. The Wild West is fun to watch on TV,but was a horrendous, lawless period in American history. We don't need this sort of irresponsibility from our government, but like the old westerns, the gallery (Nigerian youth) is always cheering even if they understand not the repercussions of the sheriff's actions.
it is when all the foreign employers of labour abandon us and unemployment rises to the sky will the many shouting here relax...

And BP was fined exactly how much and for doing what? Now I query you're enlightenment but I will still try. Now take a drum of sludge like heavy equipment or machinery oil and empty it into an Olympic sized pool, after which you should try to clean up the mess. Do you know how much crude, not petrol was gushing into the Gulf of Mexico on a daily basis, about a third of Nigeria's current output .670,000 barrels of crude per day destroying the fragile ecosystem and the means of livelihood of the people of the area. Have you seen an oil spill before, you think it is bread and AKara to clean a terrestrial spill of 1 acre talk less of thousands of square miles of violent ocean.

This is poor corporate governance on the part of MTN. Except they do not have the cash, in which case, a letter should have been written to NCC informing them of their cash postion, whilst seeking alternatives means such as the lawsuit.

The position of NCC is clear and MTN maybe liable to pay further penalties inclusive of the original fine in contention.

Bad management decision!

The fine is more irresponsible than whatever it was MTN did. What is the size of our economy that you are fining one company 5 or 3 billion dollars. How many companies in Nigeria have a turnover of 1 billion dollars.it is not their fault, naa Abacha wey loot billions make people think say billions of dollars naa small money. cryptocurrency is a lifetime investment. It is an investment that can earn you much profit every week for life. This is not a HYIP program. A lot of Nigerians and foreigners are into it. Most nairalanders are also benefitting from it. There is a WhatsApp group for all nairalanders doing it. The truth is that no other business can be as lucrative as mining of crypto currencies. The secret is finding the right one in its early stages. I must also emphasis that this is not a get-rich-quick business that many Nigerians are looking for. It is not also invest nothing and make thousands type of business too. You can request for the FREE INFO by sending a blank mail to engrolu@gmail.com, it is free to join.

It is rather Sad that we failed to realise the magnitude of MTN offence. I was a victim! An MTN number was used to threatened my life persistently. I reported to the police and on further investigation it was discovered to be unregistered! Those threatening my life could not be traced. Do you know how many people lost their lives to Boko Haram and Kidnapers that use unregistered lines to carry out their heinous crime? For crying out loud, MTN threatened our National Security! And for your information BP was responsible for clearing the spills in addition to paying billions of dollars as fine. Are you aware that a meeting was held with all telecoms company and MTN signed to the agreement that also signify the fine for violations? Even if I worked for MTN I will not support this lawlessness and greediness by MTN. Our national security is at stake here!

Where is that pathetic boko haram Minister?

Today is 1st Jan., 2016 and many Nigerians including YOU Sir, made sound calls to their love ones. Nigeria did not burn, MTN has not closed shop.

MTN will not pay that fine to augment your inabilities to fund common budget. Go and work for your money; no FREE food for a non-innovative government.

If you've got no further ideas, distribute cutlasses and hoe to almajiris, especially the sai baba crew and let everybody go and FARM.

Refusal to reduce that fine to a barest minimum is an evidence of LONG THROAT. We must kill the entitlement and omo-onile crazy mentalities, lest we destroy the youths in the country.

Ok let me lie that I agree with you,but how can you fine one company 1 trillion naira in a year of a record budget of 6 trillion naira. So Nigeria cannot fund its budget except it cripples a foreign company? You know what? MTN will not pay that fine,Buhari will flex his muscles and the company will most likely be nationalized and then some opportunists will buy the company and ruin it. You can buy the shell of a company but you can never buy the content because it is intangible. That MTN yellow is about to turn black as other networks absorb their customer base and crash under the weight of carrying a giant with poorly developed muscles. MTN,call their bluff and let history judge.
Buhari, leave MTN alone and go and develop your economy. He who fights and runs today, lives to fight another day.Stop postponing judgment day and let us collectively pay for electing visionless leaders.

thats the easiest plan, 3yrs payment plan. MTN makes $2bn in Nigeria per year, you still have to subtract operational money from that $2bn, they could be left with $1bn, so if the NCC agrees to a 3yrs plan and mtn pays $1bn every year, it makes sense. but it seems NCC are not buying that idea, they want the money now and all of it, hence people are speculating that Nigerian government wants that money for 2016 budget, thats the reason the money is requested by a certain date and payment in full.

If in deed it was not earmarked for 2016 budget, NCC can agree on that plan, putting into consideration that Mtn nigeria has no such amount in the bank.

Poverty is in the mind and reading these comments I am beginning to understand why Nigerians are so poor and underdeveloped. If entrepreneurs and big businesses didn't develop the abroad some of us run to or live in,would America be what it is today. Nigerians are very socialist in their mindset expecting the government to do everything for them including stealing from rich successful people and businesses and sharing the loot with them.
Socialism has failed the world over and will never succeed in Nigeria, not in a billion years. China was a communist country with government trying to do everything till their leaders had a rethink and opened up the country. China is only communist in word as their deeds are capitalist . Now I would rather a rich prosperous nigeria like China than a socialist poor nigeria like the China of 40 years ago.
People that hate rich people will die poor,it is not a curse,it is just the way the world works. Naa pepsin start MTN,go and start your own business and stop basking in your bankruptcy of ideas.

If you conduct a poll, I'm sure you'll find out that Glo is ridiculous in most places.
This nonsense network is downloading at the rate of 40kb/s maximum speed!

Airtel nko? They charge double your data rate, yet you people don't hate them. (I'm sure they'd have been sued in sensible countries)

Etisalat?
They don't have as much coverage as MTN, even though their service seems nice.
No Eti 3G where I stay sef.

MTN may be silly for their spam messages, but quality wise, they are the most consistent.

So all the money they make should be used to pay fine?

You fail to see my analogy. Yes, mtn makes more money than banks but if banks can go under because of just 25billion, where will mtn 700billion come from?

Or u think they have 700billion stashed somewhere?

In banks in SA. Trust me. Nig is not only their investment haven. I think u r encouraging multi national coys to disrespect the laws of Federal Republic of Nig. Did MTN Nig floaut the laws or not? If yes, what is the prescribe penalty? A stranger does not know the way to the market square, it is the villagers that shows him the way.
