Biafra was a secessionist state in south-eastern Nigeria that existed from 30 May 1967 to 15 January 1970. It took its name from the Bight of Biafra. The inhabitants were mostly the Igbo people who led the secession due to economic, ethnic, cultural and religious tensions among the various peoples of Nigeria. The creation of the new state that was pushing for recognition was among the causes of the Nigerian Civil War. Biafra represented nationalist aspirations of the Igbo people, whose leadership felt they could no longer coexist with the Northern-dominated federal government. The conflict resulted from political, economic, ethnic, cultural and religious tensions which preceded Britain’s formal decolonization of Nigeria from 1960–1963. Immediate causes of the war in 1966 included a military coup, a counter-coup, and persecution of Igbo living in Northern Nigeria. Control over oil production in the Niger Delta also played a vital strategic role.

Over the years, the tensions between the Igbo speaking parts of South –Eastern Nigeria and the federal government have refused to abate. Many sons and daughters of Igbo extraction believe that they have not been fairly treated in the Nigerian experiment. The 2015 presidential elections which produced Muhammadu Buhari as president, have further heightened these tensions. There is no gainsaying that the Igbo people voted massively against this denouement because they preferred a continuation of a Goodluck Jonathan presidency. To underscore the resentment of those who are not at home with a Buhari leadership a new organization known as Independent People of Biafra (IPOB) was formed by Nnamdi Kanu, a Nigerian immigrant based in England. Kanu, among other things established Radio Biafra through which he and his lieutenants broadcast strong messages of dissent and sometimes hate against Nigeria and her leadership. Radio Biafra they said is dedicated to the defense of rights of the indigenous people of Biafra and ultimately the actualization of the Republic of Biafra.

Nnamdi Kanu was arrested in Lagos recently and has not been able to fulfil his bail conditions. His incarceration has led to demonstrations in some parts of eastern Nigeria and selected parts of the diaspora. The current agitations bring a couple of questions to mind. What If Biafra succeeded? What are the far reaching consequences of the actualization of a Republic of Biafra? Will an Independent Biafran state be a better deal for Ndigbo? Is secession really what Ndigbo need? Are there other possible solutions to these tensions?

I am of the firm belief that any set of people should have the right to decide whether they want to remain part of any union or not. Therefore, the people of South-East Nigeria have the right to decide whether they want to remain part of Nigeria or not. But before they exercise that right, they need to be sure that it is overtly necessary. Ndigbo are by far some of the most blessed and industrious people in this country. The problem is that Igbo people are asking for what they already have. It is erroneous and misleading to think that what Ndigbo actually need is an independent republic. Ndigbo already have a geographical territory known an Eastern Nigeria or what is now known as the South-East geopolitical zone. Except in the military era, the South East has always been governed by Igbo governors and represented in the national assembly by Igbo people. This is the same situation with the other regions or geo-political zones.

All those reasons up there are only flimsy just as they are not enough to warrant secession. If you have a legitimate case for secession, please take your argument to NASS & do your thing legally through appropriate channel. Let us have debates @all levels of society & govt so that everyone can be more enlightened; therefore be able to make informed decisions/choices.

Do you want to tell me that if GEJ had won his re-election, would there be any biafra noise? You guys are only mischievious & unreliable. You continue to piss everyone off with this biafra noise when we all should be working together to make our dear Nigeria better.

You will have to convince me by proving that the prevalent inequality experienced in Nigeria of today (reason for which you want to secede) will not continue in your biafra.

No love lost bro, 'm just pissed. cool

Biafra can't come because we igbos are divided than any species of humans in this planet earth,
to start, how can an Igbo man call his own fellow Igbo man a slave (Osu, ohu etc) and deny him of his civic , social , economic , marital fundamental rights all because he settled in town other than his father's town and as such he will not be allowed to contest or do anything with his fellow Igbos ,
infact I pray that it doest come, until the Igbos have value for the personality of the individuality of all igbos irrespective of ethnicity
I know some Igbo's here will hide under the umbrella of Biafra and and will want to die , God forbid , the same Biafrans said they don't know Jesus that Jesus is a name formed by the white man to deceive us and so they call God Chukwu Okike Abiama yet they within themselves can not intermarry and you want me to come and join you in the pursuit of Biafra maybe in another life or when I am insane
anyway to those that are fighting for it , fight very well
