Pls, what are the professional courses advisable for a psychology graduate
It depends on what you want as an individual,if you want to go into HR then u can go for CIPM which is chatterred institute of personnel management, if you have that with a good degree in psychology you will be sort after as an HR person,if you want to practice as a clinician ,then you will need to go for masters in clinical psychology, with that you can work in a correctional home or lecture. These are the two major fields in psychology that thrive in Nigeria.

Every course has a very good career option. It is only left for u to work hard and excel in your field of study...Make sure u have a good Cgpa and I bet u will definately stand tall in whatever u do.
Re: Possible Career Path For A Psychology Graduate. by poj(m): 6:16pm On Jan 03, 2016
Ur question is in two ways; career path and professional course that is relevant. In terms of professional courses, u can opt for cipm (chrterd instit of pers mgt) or nim (Nig instit of mgt. In terms of career options, there are several fields of applied psychology u can explore. These include:
Clinical psychology: Practicing psy in d clinic/hosp setting.
Organizational psychology:you can work in d HR/personnel dept of any org.
Forensic psychology: You can work in d DSS, police, etc.
Counselling psychology; u can work in schools, NGO's, universities, etc. Don't have much time would have loved to go further, opportunities abound, just be equipped with the basic knowledge and principles of psychological practices.

I am a psychology graduate and I work as an HR person.

The best professional course u can do as a psychology graduate is CHARTERED INSTITUTE OF PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT CIMP... That's if u want to become a Human Resource Manager by taking course in Managerial Psychology.
Bt if u don't want to go into dat try put in for military or paramilitary forces and u can do ur masters in forensic psychology.
I'm also a psychology graduate. Those are my goals too.
God help us all!

seriously, the course is useless, a perfect waste of time

As a psychologist, you can be a motivational speaker, conduct psycho text in people migrating to other countries, examine people way of life eg Counciling of frustrated homosapeans. Again a psychologist can detect eg if she is girl, she will detect when you have money, when you need Bleep, and when you cheat on her, but if its a boy, ask LALASTICLALA

1. Become a magician. I do hope that you realize that magic isn't performed using wizardry or any of those ridiculous stuff you have probably heard perpetuated by those gullible Nigerians easily thrilled by the weird mystifying things. It involves tricking the human mind via simple concepts like misdirection and painstakingly designed contraptions. That you study psychology (I don't even know what they teach you guys) will not make this any less difficult tho. Go search Apollo Robbins and Brian Keith on youtube/google for starters.

2. Motivational speaking/ writing: See, most Nigerians are meekly creatures who have been brought up in a system that loves to revel in self-pity and incessant complaints. They want to be 'helped,' to be lifted out of their current predicament while doing no work of their own. So they will buy your books and come listen to your talks. They want to be seen as doing something that matters. The mental laziness and self-pity is too ingrained in their bones however. Have no doubt that you will scarcely change anyone's life. But you shall make a lot of money and fame for yourself. Do not feel guilty when this happens because it is no fault of yours. Simply smile to the bank while singing praises to the Almighty.

I really don't want to to insult you. But read my post again. The only thing on my comment referring to you was " madam what kind of statement is this" the remaining comments was referring to the op. Who then is confused between both of us? Smh. Next time it's better to keep shut or ignore if you don't no about something than to comment and look stupid.

Like someone wrote, you can pursue an academic or a professional path. However, an academic path gives you the opportunity to become a lecturer or a consultant in whatever field of psychology you pursue. There are several fields which some have also listed - education, organizational, clinical, forensic, sport, etc.

As a professional, you can basically pursue a career in human resource management and related fields.
However, be ready to do a Masters because without it, you cannot specialize and ultimately be considered a specialist.

I had my first and second degree in Psychology with specialization in Social and Personality psychology. I have worked for years in a consulting firm that specialized in training and social developmental research. Research is something any Psychologist and social scientist should particularly be adept in. I have also been involved HRM especially in the area of job recruitment, selection and placement.

My career and involvement has cut across the private and public sector with focus on social development projects. As a result, I have had experience working as a consultant on several World Bank, ADB and other internationally-supported or funded projects in Nigeria.

Over the years, I have consulted and still consult for federal and state government ministries and agencies and for the World Bank. My expertise include social research, capacity building, and project management. Sectors involved include education, health aagriculture amongst others. I currently float a consulting firm of my own. For privacy reason, I cannot go into more detail than I have shared.

Did I know or plan for these when I was working towards admission into the university? No. I intended studying Economics but somehow ended up with Psychology.
However, once admitted into this course, I sought information on its prospect and got to embrace it eventually. The truth is you have a lot of options when you study this course depending on your dreams and also your exposure and contacts along the way. A lot of people are ignorant of its prospect (I was too before) but believe me, it has a lot.

Finally, should you wish to take this course, please take the research aspect very seriously as you should with any social science course.

It really doesn't matter you can work anywhere, I am a psychology graduate, but I am in the oil and gas industry as a Materials/Logistics Management personnel and I have been able to build a career path towards SCM, supply chain management, anywhere the opportunity comes you grab and work towards upgrading yourself so you can be relevant in your new field.

That's the sad state of the nation's education sector. Most lecturers are not solving any problem. They're part of the problem.
