DOMAIN, IP ADDRESS, DNS?

What are they really? Its possible in your office portal or website the techie guy there types in strings of numbers separated by dots (something like 196.92.43.54) and bingo a webpage opens and in other cases he types a domain name in the browser address bar to get to the same page.How come?Whats happening?

A computer or any electronic device is essentially identified by an IP Address – four strings of numbers separated by dots.They are unique meaning no two machines or computer or device has the same IP address as the other.This is important to avoid conflicts when one computer tries to communicate with others.An IP address can also be static or prefixed or dynamically generated.This is a story for another day.

Let me tell you something else.Always look at a website as though it where a computer.This is because a website is simple a subset of a big computer called SERVERS.

This is why you simple access some websites by simply typing in the IP address of the Server where they are hosted.But the thing is its easy to remember www.yahoo.com than its IP address.This brings us to Domain names WHAT ARE DOMAIN NAMES

A domain name is a simple name which can linked to an IP address with via a database called DNS (we talk a bit more about DNS shortly).This means a domain name which could be likened to a house address only basically tries to help us understand, remember or identify a device, machine or a website.

SO WHERE DOES DNS REALLY COMES IN?

DNS means Domain Name Server and its a sort of a database application which keeps records of all the domain names and IP address and which is mapped to which.This important for the WWW to be able to find a page when you surf the net.

So it means that a DNS could be likened to a telephone directory where phone numbers are linked to physical addresses.
