Tutelary Deities- A Real Life Example. by lawani: 8:41am On Jan 15, 2016
Observing the practice of having tutelary deities among groups like the Yoruba, some Europeans opined in alarm that 'the Negro makes and breaks his God at will!'. Among the Yoruba, tutelary deities are normally thrown away upon the demise of the owner. When I was in Ile Ife, a man from Edunabon who described himself as a devout Christian but who also has a tutelary deity at home that he offers a cock and some palmwine to annually explained to me how tutelary deities are acquired under the auspices of the Alagba or chief priest of the main Edunabon deity named Abobiakuro. The man got his tutelary deity from Abobiakuro's chief priest, he throws a mini party for it every year and even has a masquerade for it. When he dies, the tutelary deity will be thrown away while Abobiakuro remains. The man described his tutelary deity as very powerful just like Abraham would describe the God of Abraham. This was the liberal way ancient people approached the God concept. The God of Abraham was nothing more than Abraham's tutelary deity.
