Abagworo: Yes, those days all drivers must pass driving test before a driving license is issued. Also, it was during the babangida years 1985 that tokunbo's were used for taxis. New cars were purchased for taxis, e.g. Datsun cars, etc and for buses it was Nissan urvan, Toyota, etc all new. |

idinye: Not really. It's true that the craziest traffic jams used to occur on Marina Street, but remember that the Third Mainland Bridge ended at the Adekunle exit, so everybody had to use Herbert Macaulay Road in order to get to Ikorodu Road. There used to be serious traffic on Herbert Macaulay Road, Ikorodu Road, Western Avenue, etc. And of course there used to be traffic jams on Western Avenue whenever the Eagles were playing. |

Many people had two cars just because of the "odd" and "even" number system. One car would have odd numbers while the other had even numbers. The government had decreed that cars with odd number license plates could only be used on certain days, while cars with even number plates could only be used on the other days. This was done in order to reduce the number of cars on the road and thus reduce traffic jams. The system was defeated because many people had more than one car. |

What's interesting for me is the LMTS bus in the picture. LMTS had been replaced by LSTC by 1982. Compare. 1) An LMTS bus from the 1960s. 2) An LSTC bus from the 1980s. 1 Like |

Re: Photo Of Lagos Traffic In 1982 by Cuche: 5:27pm On Jan 25, 2016 |
That can't be 1982 It's likely 1992, the use of 1975 and above model 504 for taxi could not have been that early. Remember it was an executive cars for top government workers It is just like saying Peugeot 406 2000 and above model is painted and used for taxi, commonly in 2008 Apart from the picture quality which is too sharp for a 1982 photo |
Re: Photo Of Lagos Traffic In 1982 by TonySpike: 6:12pm On Jan 25, 2016 |
I've done forensic audit of this picture as follows: 1. Plate numbers of these vehicles only match pre-1992 era 2. This road is Ikorodu road, somewhere between Palmgrove and Jibowu corridor. 3. This road used to have meshed dividers between the fast lane and service lane around the 90's. I can't find any sign of dividers in this picture. 4. Based on the widespread use of Peugeot 504 as taxis, this should be at least 10-15 years from the first manufacturing year of this model in 1968. Based on these deductions, I hereby suspect that this picture was taken between 1980 and 1989. Anybody supporting me? Naptu? 1 Like |

TonySpike: Absolutely. Your number 2 = Fadeyi (check out the Agip petrol station). The only odd thing about the picture is the LMTS bus (LSTC was more common in 1982), but there were still a few around in 1982 (mostly on the mainland). With regards to the heavy traffic - remember that the 3rd Mainland Bridge had not been completed at this time, so vehicles heading to Ikeja, etc would have to exit the bridge at Ebute Metta/Adekunle and take Herbert Macaulay Way and Ikorodu Road to get to Anthony, Ikeja, etc. Re your number 4. There were also quite a few airconditioned 504 taxis around at that time. This was before the "drop" era, so most taxi rides were shared. This was in the middle of the kidnapping crisis (gbomo gbomo), so you needed to be careful when getting into a cab 3 Likes |

Re: Photo Of Lagos Traffic In 1982 by naptu2: 7:12pm On Jan 25, 2016 |
Mcteeblack: There were 504 taxis in Lagos in 1982. Many of them. Peugeot 405 had not been made in 1982. 1 Like |

Everybody pls take a look at the "Ekene dili chukwu " bus. You don't need a forensic expert to tell you that this is a pre 90's pic. ..definitely the '80s. |

Re: Photo Of Lagos Traffic In 1982 by naptu2: 7:02am On Jan 27, 2016 |
Mcteeblack: 504s were used as taxis in 1982. In fact, they were the most common taxis around. Remember that this was during the second republic when there was a lot of money around and that 504s were actually made in Nigeria at that time. Remember that the naira was stronger than the dollar at this time. 504s were taxis, police cars and pool cars in ministries at this time. The police mainly used Land Rovers, Peugeot 504 and Peugeot 404 pickup trucks at this time (mobile police used Mercedes Unimog). The luxury cars then were S Class Mercedes Benz and long wheel base Mercedes limousines. 504 and 505 were only thought of as luxury cars when the military governments banned public officials from using Mercedes Benz cars and when it became more difficult to buy brand new cars because of the economic downturn of the mid 1980s. Below: Colonel Raymond Dumuje's car after the 1976 coup. It was common for government officials, senior civil servants and military officers to have Mercedes Benz cars as their official cars in the 1970s and early '80s. This was the oil boom period and Nigeria had too much money. This changed after the 1983/84 coup. By 1985 even the President's official car was a 504 and no government official, except ambassadors in foreign missions, used a Mercedes Benz as official car. Colonel Dumuju was shot by coup plotters at the junction of Awolowo Road and Ribadu Road (near Mobil Petrol Station). The coupists mistook him for General Obasanjo. |

Mcteeblack: You are wrong. The first picture that I posted is actually from the 1960s. The only 1980s picture that I posted is the picture of the LSTC bus. |
Re: Photo Of Lagos Traffic In 1982 by grandstar(m): 11:24am On Feb 01, 2018 |
I am not surprised. . That was Ikorodu road then. That was the prime route to the Island as there was no Third mainland bridge. It was only after the completion of the Third Mainland Bridge in 1990/1991 that lead to a massive easing of traffic on Ikorodu road. In those days, you had odd and even number days in order to limit traffic on the road . If your car was even number, you were only allowed on the right as on certain days and the same applied with odd numbers. Commercial cars which had green number plates were allowed liberties to ply the roads whenever Guess what, many people soon had commercial number plates like my mum's danfo |
