I insist that UNN is just living in its past glory... In fact, the internal politics in the school has robbed her of the her mandate as a citadel of learning.
When two elephants are fighting the grasses still suffer.
UNIZIK IS STILL A BETTER HAVEN FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND MORAL RECTITUDE.

Dear All,

WEBOMETRICS just released its December 2015 ranking of Top 2000 Universities in the world based on their Google Scholar Citation profiles[First Edition (December 2015)].

It is my pleasure to inform you that UNN came 1st in Nigeria, 14th in Africa and 1389th in the world. As a matter of fact, less than 30 African Universities were ranked. Also, only UNN and University Ibadan were ranked from Nigeria, a pointer to the overall poor quality of academic publications from most Nigerian universities.

Hence, our collective efforts are paying off and UNN is now counted amongst the best in the world. We are now reaping the dividends of increased publications by UNN staff in high impact and visible journals. However, we are still a long way from getting into the top five in Africa. But it is achievable, if we intensity our publications in high impact visible journals that can be accessed and cited from all over the world.

A summary of the ranking as it concerns Africa is:

Quite a surprise to see Imperial College London at lowly 23, and UCL ahead of Cambridge.

And to see Emory, Brown, Baylor College of Medicine & Dartmouth (some Ivy League universities) so low, not even within first 30, is surprising.

My old university was ranked 16 worldwide one year & we were murmuring with discontent. grin

So what I don't understand is the NUC list that places UNILAG as No 1 lol! I should seriously laugh at Nigerians for knowing nothing... That NUC list is damn political because am sure they didn't do their mathematics very well. They'll just visit a school, look at one or two places and conclude...

But our education sector needs work... serious work!

Buhari needs to probe the list, it's not painting the true phantasmagoria of the Nigeria edu-sphere... lol

on a more serious note, it actually calls for a deep reflection of the fact that we've really not lived up to expectations as a Nation, even within Africa. We need policies that would drive our institutions to match with the best in the world. I for one appreciate what my school stands for, even during the period of bad leadership and misuse of power , it was visionary. And I know things will only get better at, the better by far University in the presence of visionary leaders who are not carried away with "Yam-eating". so help us God. Amen #betterbyfar #Unilorin

But it will attract some rich & brilliant students & academics from Japan, South Korea, Russia, USA, India, Saudi Arabia & other Gulf states.

That will further enhance student & staff quality, thereby keeping the universities at the top for longer.

These rich students will in the future donate huge money to their alma mater endowment funds.

For example: Harvard university has a fund of $37.6 Billion, MIT = $13.7 billion. Stanford: $16.136 billion.

In UK Cambridge =£5.890Billion, Oxford = £4.246billion.

Now compare to 9ja 2015 budget of $23.8 billion, a country of 200 million people!

From 9ja "fire brigade" & "owo mi da" approach, no money will be shared for ranking.

But the future benefits can be enormous.
