UMANAH .O. UMANAH’S FAILURE:
KARMA OR RETRIBUTION?

The failure of the self acclaim APC governorship candidate in Akwa Ibom State at the supreme court has generated mixed reactions, with few condemning and thousands pouring encomium on the supreme court for its uncompromising approach to ensure equity and fairness in the judiciary. Comrade Ndiana in this article digs deep on why it should be considered as retributive justice.
In the build up to the 2007 gubernatorial election, a number of power brokers and ‘king makers‘ had converged on different platforms sorting for who should succeed the then outgoing governor of the state, Architect Victor Attah who had projected his son-in-law as his successor, a development which sparked rancor among the elites and the entire Akwa Ibom populace, Obong Victor Attah was accused for attempting to circumvent democracy for nepotism , This development didn’t go down well with some political bigwigs who preferred to pitch their tent with Godswill Akpabio against the preference of the then governor’s son-in-law. A political feud which saw to the introduction of the Akpabio’s dynasty, thus, ushering in the reign of terror in Akwa Ibom state in May 29, 2007. However, the horrible oppression of the helpless downtrodden indigenes of the state by the Akpabio’s administration attracted the empathy of senator Udoedehe, revered as the most stable and powerful politician in Akwa Ibom State, perceived as the arrow head of Akpabio ‘s emergence. Udoedeghe after witnessing the visible horror, pains, insecurity and socio-economic alienation inflicted on the highly enterprising masses, led the crusade for change with his slogan of positive change. However, the governor perceiving the growing threat occasioned by the monumental acceptance of the revolutionist and a vulnerable spot by virtue of senator Udoedehe’s antecedent, improved funding for political man hunt on every perceived opponent of the government. On Sunday, June 2010, Paul Inyang , a PDP stalwart was assassinated in a church in his home town and a grave allegation was leveled against the freedom fighter Senator Udoedehe, with the then IGP Onovo visiting the scene but frustratingly and disappointingly declined from releasing any statement . But the resposibility of the security operatives was usurped and wrongly annexed by Umana O. Umana, the self-acclaimed strongman of the government who availed himself as a false witness by signing a press release of the allegation of murder against the innocent senator Udoedeghe. Now with Umana’s recent confession that he had nursed the ambition to become the governor of Akwa Ibom state ten years ago and Akpabio admitting that Ibibios in his government were responsible for the killing of their brothers, I am compelled to ask the following questions, was his action a strategy to destroy Udoedehe’s freedom match which was aimed at liberating Akwaibomites so as to pave way for his greedy ambition to govern the state by all means? who then should we say were responsible for the killing of Paul Inyang? Nevertheless, the numerous attempt to destroy the born activist’s personality cum reputation was highly resisted by the coterie of un-refrained freedom foot soldiers who took to the streets on 29th June 2010 in protest of the illegal arrest and detention of their leader, teargas and canisters were dispensed on the helpless citizen whose only crime was to embark on a peaceful protest for freedom. Udoedehe however didn’t relinquish his ambition to liberate the Akwa Ibom people from the political insurgency that had blotted the rays of emancipation of the good people of the state. On Saturday 16 June, 2010, he made a landmark move, by his defection from PDP to ACN in pursuit for change and the revolution of the Akwa Ibom polity, which led to the mass exodus of liberty-thirsty and change -driven disciples to ACN.
Be it as it may, this sparked and ignited a feeling of insecurity amongst the ruling elites and thus, they quickly slammed another charge on Sen. Udoedehe using the IGP. Regim who violated a court order of 24th October 2010 and still went ahead to witch-hunt the freedom fighter. While Regim was at it, some virus infected power –drunk Ibibio monarchs had summoned a meeting presided over by Ntisong Ekidem disowning Senator Udoedehe, Obong Victor Attah, Rt. Hon T.O.Akpan and Ikpafak Thompson Essien as true Ibibio sons. Then the question was, what was their crime? Under whose auspices did these selfish monarchs act? Whose interest were they protecting? This blackmail, however, didn’t deter senator Udoedehe in his quest to free Akwa Ibom people from the whims and caprices of tyranny. On his campaign match on the 22nd of march 2011, the blood of innocent agitators for change littered and coloured the street of Ikot Ekpene when the campaign train for change under the umbrella of ACN visited the area and was ambushed by thugs hired by Sunny Ibanga (a partner in UOU movement today). Udoedehe who narrowly escaped death was arrested the following day with a charge of treason, Arson and felony. Disregarding such petty allegations and immune to any intimidation, Udoedehe still forged ahead to win the election but was literally denied access to the government house.
The unrepentant announcement of a manufactured election result by INEC was a thing of joy to a clique of kleptomaniac political sycophants. On the other hand, it was another due cause for protest by over eighty percent of the electorates who had expected, in all fairness the emergence of their freedom fighter as governor. The Judiciary often believed to be the last hope of a common man also played its own role in this script of deception when they treacherously truncated the expectation of the majority in the state on the altar of lies, bribery, deception and illegally cooked-up and conjured legal technicality as they pointed to the rule of failure to seek the leave of court for pre-hearing and a subsequent 180 days expiration syndrome as the fundamental basis to discountenance the case.
“Umanah’s Journey to karma”
In July 2013 the news of Umanah’s sack as SSG sparked jubilation from both people in government and outside government celebrating his exit as they termed it the” fall of Hitler”. This, in all honesty and practicality was the beginning of karma taking a toll on umanah’s political ambition. The entrance of umanah into APC “the broom party he once buried” on the 28th November, 2014 was celebrated by some mediocres but was a disaster to the members of the legacy team of the party (APC) who saw his defection as the entrance of an oppressor and an unpatriotic politician with no electoral value.
Umanah didn’t disappoint these members of the legacy team who had perceived their imminent persecution in their hard earned party but rather reaffirmed their conception of him by illegally appointing several dubious sit tight political conglomerate like Ita Awak to replace the authentic officers of the party. Election funds were diverted to “IDN and co” leaving the treasury of the party empty with only #50,000 being disbursed to each voting unit of over 5,000 electorate. What a miscalculation? These miscalculation and defects in his political strategy, however enabled karma rear its ugly head and take its cause. Today the affirmation of Gov. Akpabio’s third term in office through Udom Emmanuel by the Supreme Court is a thing of celebration by frustrated partisans, though there’s intense need for such celebration as karma has taken turn on Umanah for selfishly and ruthlessly betraying the Ibibios. Who is the next?
