Proper breastfeeding for infants have benefits for
both the child and the mother alike, and there are
more and more day to day evidences to support
the claim.
The breast milk is specifically designed for your
baby's development and the presence of
antibodies It's true there are breast milk
substitutes for infants, but it's increased use is
still the reason why there are many infants with
diseases that could have been prevented through
proper breastfeeding. Nearly half of all diarrhoeal
diseases and respiratory infections in children
could have been prevented with increased rate
and proper breastfeeding.
Breast milk is the most essential and important
food for your baby for the first 6 or more months
of life, and if deprived of these: the child is at
risk of developing health complications as the
grow.
• Proper brain development and performs better in
intelligence tests. - WHO. I.e it boosts your
child's intelligence.
• Breast milk is full of disease fighting substances
and helps protect the baby from illness or even
sudden death (sudden infant death syndrome).
• Babies breast fed properly are less likely to
developing allergies later in life.
• More so, they are less likely to be obese or
overweight and less prone to diabetes later in life.
• Breastfeeding reduces the risk of breast and
ovarian cancer of the mother.
• It also helps in reducing stress level in the
mother.
• The release of oxytocin helps the uterus
contracts; thereby reducing post delivery blood
loss and help gets the uterus back to its normal
size quickly.
• The more a mother breastfeed, the more you
burn calories and the less likely you tend to be
obese.
To ensure child and mother survival and good
health condition, proper breastfeeding has to be
promoted and local health authorities need to
take this up and inform nursing mothers in
several localities. The UNICEF and WHO are also
trying everything in their capacity to address this
issue through the GLOBAL BREASTFEEDING
ADVOCACY INITIATIVE in collaboration with
international partners in providing leadership to
improve breastfeeding rates.
