January 2016 was the most peaceful month since 2013

– President Buhari’s strategies against Boko Haram are working

– One month after defeat shows that the sect is now on downturn
– The deadliest massacre took the lives of 101 Nigerians

– The Nigerian army continues to record success in the war against the insurgency When President Muhammadu Buhari in December last year announced that the Boko Haram insurgents have been technically
defeated, not all Nigerians agree with this statement.

However, the figures show that the month after the terrorists defeat was the safest in Nigeria since 2013.
Shortly after Buhari was sworn in as country’s leader in May 2015, he boldly proclaimed that the insurgents would be defeated by the end of the year.

The Nigerian and international public were truly sceptical. The previous government of Goodluck Jonathan had announced many times that deadly militant sect would be

“soon be history” or that its leader Abubakar Shekau was dead, only to see both Boko Haram and Shekau re-reappear stronger than before.
Boko Haram in January killed 126 people in

comparison with 346 that lost their lives in December 2015. One of the deadliest onslaughts of the insurgents occurred near Maiduguri on January 30, where the militants massacred 101 people using tactics that have become wearily familiar.

The sect in its determination to storm Maiduguri, Borno state capital, attacks the outskirts of the city for many times but was successfully repelled by the Nigerian troops.

The Boko Haram also continued its suicide bombings on the soft targets. The suicide attacker killed at least 10 at crowded Gombi market and male suicide bomber also detonated explosive in Gwoza.

In the same vein, the Nigerian army recorded some success in its bid to finally crush the insurgency.
Troops have killed 50 insurgents while rescuing 500 people in an operation around Mafa, Dikwa and Kala areas.

The Nigerian Air Force with Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle destroyed what is believed to be a Boko Haram logistics base.

However, the threat from the insurgency has decreased and flowed, and while Boko Haram is now on a downturn, the militant sect may have new tactics and strategies as well as a plan to return stronger than before.
