Zika is a mosquito borne virus currently plaguing brazil and some other countries in south america. This virus causes the birth defect called microcephaly which makes new born babies have abnormally small heads.


By August this year, brazil will host the world in Rio de janeiro 2016 olympics. As Nigerian athletes will be partaking in the events, it is most important for our government to start taking proactive measures so as not to allow the zika virus to migrate down to our shores.

Currently, it is stated that the zika virus traces has been found in saliva and urine. This means that it could be contacted through kissing. The athletes and any other nigerian travelling to brazil for the olympics should be made aware of ways to prevent contacting the virus.

Such ways could involve:

1. Staying away from mosquito infested areas or keeping them away with mosquito nets

2. Staying away from sex including kissing(prostitute should be stayed away from). If abstinence is difficult, protection should be used.

3. If bitten by a mosquito while at the olympics, such a person should report to a quarantine unit at the airport. As a matter, the government should monitor all returnees from the rio olympics.


You can also add your own ideas which can go a long way in helping our health sector prevent the zika virus from getting to our country. Remember, if an infected person steps into the country, the disease could spread cos there are mosquitoes in Nigeria.
