With the high exchange rate in the country, a lot of people are already witnessing high price on gadgets - phones, laptops and televisions. If this continues, many mobile companies will move out of Nigeria, then that is when we will all start to embrace products made in Nigeria.

There are many Nigerian made smartphones with nice specs, but many people won’t give it a second thought to patronize them. Take a look at iMose, Orbra, Karabow, Solo and many more. It is very clear that if we start purchasing goods made in Nigeria, our economy will go.

Meet Freedom 251

The Ringing Bell’s ‘Freedom 251’ smartphone is currently the cheapest Android phone in the world. It cost only Rs 251 (less than $4) in India. At that price, it's easily the most affordable smartphone in the world.

The phone was recently launched in New Delhi, India in line with the Company vision of “empowering all Indians and transforming India’s growth story” at an event presided over by Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi, MP, with the Union Defence Minister Sri Manohar Parrikar as the Chief Guest.

As far as the Freedom 251 specifications are concerned it is not that bad, but too good for the price, well awesome. The Freedom 251 sports a 4 inch screen (IPS) supporting 960 x 540 pixels (qHD) resolution, the newspaper ad however says screen is with WVGA resolution (800 x 480 pixels). This handset is powered by a 1.3GHz quad core processor loaded with 1GB RAM and 8GB storage. There is micro SD card support of up to 32GB.

This Freedom 251 is said to be running on Android Lollipop 5.1. It comes with a decent 3.2MP AF camera packed on the rear and a VGA camera on the front. Key features are 3G, 2G, WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth, and house a 1450 mAh battery capacity.

Believe you me, we have guys that can design something like this in Nigeria, but no one will give a damn about it when they hear it is made in Nigeria

What the hell? Promo phone is what you are calling a cheap android phone. Op don't you know that empowerment scheme is the same as offering of promo. It is like when Mtn or other decides to spend N100 million to do a promo.
What I am saying is, the cost of putting together android phone of that spec is way over 20 dollars let alone 4 dollars. The company is simply paying for the cost of production and making it available to indians at the price of 4 dollars, even if it means that they won't make profit but loss. That's how empowerment scheme works, the company is practically paying a large portion of the phone's price, so that the public can pay a small amount to get it.
So this phone doesn't qualify to be called a cheap android phone, for in reality, it is not cheap. Someone else is paying a large portion of the price for the public.
