Why Did Nzeogwu Never Tell Obasunjo About The Coup He Was Planning? by attackgat: 12:41pm On Feb 21, 2016
In 1960, 4 young men were commissioned as officers of the Nigerian Army. Two of them were Yorubas, the other two were Igbos. The four men were:

1)Lt Olusegun Obasunjo
2)Lt Chukwuma Nzeogwu
3)Lt Olufemi Olutoye
4)Lt Gabriel Okonweze

By 1965, all four men had become Majors and Nzeogwu along with other disgruntled officers who were disgusted with the political violence in the country started recruiting fellow officers for a coup. Nzeogwu told Olutoye about his plans and Olutoye said he would assist Nzeogwu as long as the coup was bloodless. Nzeogwu told Okonweze about his plans and Okonweze readily agreed to participate. However, Okonweze was transfered to Enugu Barrak before the coup began, rendering his services useless.

But despite being best friends, Nzeogwu never told Obasunjo about the impending coup. I have often wondered, why did Nzeogwu never tell his best friend, Obasunjo about the coup?

Well the coup was an Ib coup with the intention of killingg Yoruba and Hausa leaders whilst sparing Ib ones so I don't expect him to tell Obasanjo about that

Olutoye told Nzeogwu he would only participate in the coup if the coup was bloodless.lol! Yoruba and fear of death. Nah so General Diya see small knife/ Fulani dagger for Abacha side table, and he knelt down and started crying profusely. Lol

I think Nzeogwu knew the chameleonic trait of the yorubas that was why he decided to go solo.

According to Obasanjo's book, My Command, both were in the same Officers' Mess that night of January 14 1966,when Nzeogwu informed Obasanjo that he Nzeogwu was going out on regular NIGHT MILITARY EXERCISES.
No Nigerian today that wants to see tomorrow dare believe Obasanjo's account of anything, because both MAINTAINED contact by letters until July 31 1966, day Nzeogwu died at Obollo-Eke, & Obasanjo was at Makurdi, instead of Ibadan where he was officially the Garrison Commander.
1. What was Obasanjo doing at Makurdi that night of July 31 1967?
2. Why can't Obasanjo publish the letters Nzeogwu wrote to him?
These can shed much light on what really happened, & why.

Obasanjo has indeed been a very lucky man
