According to social media tracking database Hookit, Cristiano Ronaldo popularly referred to as CR7, has made history on social media by becoming the first athlete to reach 200 million followers across Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

The Real Madrid of Spain, superstar play-maker has 109.7m followers on Facebook, 49.6m on Instagram and 40.7m on Twitter after a "meteoritic rise" in popularity.

Ronaldo, now boasts more followers than prominent past and present NBA stars Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Steph Curry's combined 187m.

He may have lost to Lionel Messi in the race to a third consecutive Ballon d'Or in January but the star player easily trumps his long-time rival's 120.8m followers on social media, though the Argentine does not have a Twitter account.
