Lagos State Government has lifted the restriction order on human and vehicular movement for the February Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise on Saturday, February 27, 2016 in order to allow for effective participation of all stakeholders in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination organized by Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB).

The State Commissioner for the Environment, Dr. Babatunde Adejare, who disclosed this on Thursday in his office, said that it became imperative for the government to waive the restriction in order not to jeopardize the future of the candidates whose counterparts in other parts of the Federation would also sit for the same examination.

“As a responsible and responsive government, we value the education of our children very dearly and therefore resolved to relax the restriction order in the interest of our future leaders,” he said.

He however said that aside from those participating in the examination, all residents are expected to still observe the exercise in their various homes in spite of the non-restriction of movement, emphasizing that it is expedient to clear the drains in front of their homes especially as the rainy season is fast approaching.

Adejare said that the issue of sanitation has become very critical, especially with the geometric rise in the population of the state, thus making the regular clean up necessary for a healthier, cleaner and sustainable environment.

“As we gradually approach the rainy season, I wish to enjoin Lagosians to shun all acts that could contribute to flooding or dump waste in unauthorized places like canals and drainage channels in order to reduce the incidence of flooding,” he added.

The Commissioner cautioned Lagosians against patronizing cart pushers who end up dumping waste collected into canals and Lagoons, explaining that it is by so doing that “we can all assist to make the state deflooding programme a success”.

He also disclosed that the State Government has embarked on continuous clearing, maintenance and dredging of canals across the state to prevent the incidence of flooding.

While imploring Lagosians to bag their refuse properly to allow for easy collection and disposal, the Commissioner gave assurance that the government would deploy men and equipment to ensure quick evacuation of waste generated during the sanitation exercise.
