A BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) driver, Gbadebo Musiliu, who allegedly knocked down a 68-year-old woman, was on Thursday arraigned at an Ikorodu Magistrate’s Court in Lagos State, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

The accused, whose address is known, is facing two counts charge of dangerous driving and manslaughter.

Musiliu, 45, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

But the prosecutor, Cpl. Mary Ajiteru, said that the accused person committed the offences as he drove recklessly and caused the death of Mrs. Serifat Tiamiyu.

According to her, the accident occurred on February 18 at Owode Elede area of Ikorodu at about 9.20am.

She said the accused, the driver of Yutong BRT bus with number plate EKY 943 XR with code no. 172, drove without respect for other road users.

The prosecutor said, “Musiliu drove the bus on the BRT corridor on the public highway in a dangerous manner without regard for other drivers and road users.

“His conduct was inconsiderate of the usual traffic on that highway at the time the offences were committed and did not consider the pedestrians that were on the road then.

“To have caused the death of a woman on that BRT corridor, there is every reason to believe that the accused drove dangerously.”

He, however, objected to the bail application of the accused on the grounds that the offences were grievious.

The offences contravened Sections 18 and 27(1) of the Road Traffic Act, Laws of Lagos State 2011.

Ruling on the bail application, the Magistrate, Mrs. Bola Olagbegi-Adelabu, granted the driver bail in the sum of N100,000 with two responsible sureties.

She said, “The particulars of the sureties must be verified by the prosecutor and his tax payments receipts must be ascertained before being admitted in that capacity.”

She adjourned the case until March 17 for mention.

BRT drivers are mostly touts and ex-molue driver. They drive recklessly without fear of God in them. This story just brought memory of my late friend AMOS,knocked down by a BRT bus at ikorodu.

The Lagos State Ministry of transport should make a move to halt all this killings, enough is enough!
