Crayfish And Shrimp : A Case Of Ignorance. by gboyous(m): 11:15am On Mar 14, 2016
Fela kuti, a popular yoruba musician, once sang 'Teacher, don't teach me nonsense, because the person you thought yesterday has died today'. That was an advice to everyone who was serving as a teacher of any sort.
Starting with parents, a child learns almost by observing and getting instructions from them, hereby making the parents the first and most important teachers to a child.
But what if the parents were uneducated and or ignorant?
What if they had bad teachers in their youth?
Would the child know any better than them?
In Nigeria, everyone knows what Crayfish is : a kind of seafood, an ingredient for soups and other dishes, with a distinct flavour and taste, usually grounded before use, but Shrimps are not eaten simply because people don't know what shrimps are, but wait, here comes a shocking truth.
It is quite heartbreaking to discover that 'shrimp' is what people call 'crayfish' in Nigeria.
From the parents, to school teachers and elders in any given society, no one knows what crayfish really is.
It will be difficult to try to trace the first time the word 'crayfish' was used to refer to 'shrimp'. No one has ever called shrimp by its real name.
In a social survey conducted in an urban location in Nigeria, people were asked if they knew that crayfish was the wrong name for shrimp, suprisingly, 98% percent didn't know, 1% cared not for what it was called since they were born to hear shrimps called crayfish. The remaining 1% said they knew but wouldn't use it because the society would not understand.
But what is the reason for this mix up?
Bad Teachers!
The Nigerian education system 'educates' people to be stupid, by employing illiterate teachers and not encouraging research. Teachers should be trained and tested periodically to achieve competence. Schools should be well equiped to meet the global education standard. Research should be conducted. Computers should be used in schools as teaching aids.
The society needs to know that education brings light and progress.
The country needs to focus more on the education of the teachers, to make sure they don't teach nonsense, only then will the 'taught' be able to bear fruit with the knowledge.
In conclusion, every man is the author of his own ignorance, everyone must know that illiteracy and ignorance work hand in hand in thwarting the progress of any child, adult, state and nation.
