Wike And Amaechi In Battle For Political Control by Nobody: 12:31am On Mar 18, 2016 |
Though their names are not on the ballot papers but the election is largely a battle between Governor Nyesom Wike and his predecessor, Mr Chibuike Amaechi who is now Minister of Transportation. They are the two personalities who will largely influence the direction of things at the state level. They have gone round the three senatorial districts wooing voters for their party candidates. Wike needs members of his Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to win the state House of Assembly seats to gain firm control of the House given the significance of control of the House to any governor. A governor can be thrown out of his seat by the lawmakers if he does not exercise a good grip on the House and its activities. He also needs his loyalists in the PDP to represent the state at the National Assembly, believing that it will enhance his synergy between his government and the lawmakers. On his part, Amaechi apparently would want to use this rerun to prove that the defeat suffered by the APC in the last election was largely on account of the reported irregularities that characterised the election during which he could not even vote.
