(July 21) - The case of a 555-pound South Carolina teenager has legal and health experts throughout the country considering whether child obesity is a form of child abuse, according to a report in USA Today.
Alexander Draper, 14, is now in foster care and his mother, Jerri Gray, was arrested in June and charged with criminal neglect. Gray, 49, said she was doing all she could to help her son lose weight. Her attorney said if his client is found guilty, it would "set a precedent that opens Pandora's box."

South Carolina mom Jerri Gray faces felony child neglect charges over her son, Alexander Draper, 14, who weighs 555 pounds. They made national headlines when they were reported missing in May, and were found later that month in Baltimore. Gray told CBS News that she works late shifts, which leaves her little time to prepare healthy meals for her son.

Well, this is sad. Y'all can click on the link to vote. 555 pounds is too much for a 14-yr-old.

I personally don't think it's child abuse but the child should be taken away from the mother since she's obviously doing something wrong.

Many times it is not within the parent's control. I think it depends on the age of the child. If they are an infant or toddler that is being much overfed and weighs double or triple what they should then there's the possibility that's abusive but with a teenager they are more in contol of what they eat.

Some of the stories on that site are really pitiful and funny at the same time.

Ex-cultist Ria Ramkissoon pleaded guilty March 30 in the starvation death of her 1-year-old son, Javon Thompson. Officials said cult members stopped feeding the boy when he refused to say "Amen" after a meal. In an unusual deal, prosecutors agreed to drop the charges if the boy comes back to life.

Those prosecutors are funny people . . .  grin

How can a 1-yr old be expected to say "amen" after his meal?

I dont agree that it is child abuse, but abandonment of parental duty, cos it is the duty of the mama and papa to make sure the kid eat well and exercise.
But then, how can you blame mama and dada, when they have both gone to work all day and the kids is basically raised by the daycare.

A victim of deranged christianity . . .

Madeline Kara Neumann of Weston, Wis., died in March 2008 after her parents prayed for healing rather than getting medical help. The 11-year-old, shown here, suffered from a treatable form of diabetes. Her parents, Dale and Leilani Neumann, are charged with reckless homicide in connection with her death.

they must have wanted to recoup their tithes and offerings so badly.

^^^^^^^^^^^Child obesity is child abuse. Dog owners could face prosecution in the UK for overfeeding their pets. If it applies to animals, why not humans who are expected to be more intelligent?

~Sissy~:

don't think it's abuse, for me it's lack self control.

A lack of self-control that leads to bodily harm is abuse.

Opening: Wife ticks off husband.
Effect: Husband loses self-control.
Reaction: Makes wife see stars in daylight plus a rearrangement of her dentition without possesses a current dentistry practicing license.
Plea: Lack of self-control
Judgement: Husband he cools off in jail for five years for battery, aggravated assault, (not to mention practicing dentistry without a license  cheesy)

A 555-lb teenager is way over the top - It is first-class abuse.

The word abuse is a constriction of abnornal use. It sure fits the definition here.
