Lagosians Kick As LAWMA Commences Exploitation Of Residents (see Evidence) by boman2014: 3:26pm On Mar 21, 2016
Some residents of Ogba in Lagos state have expressed
displeasure as they woke up one morning to behold a huge
and ‘accumulated’ waste bill in front of their houses.

The residents have described the development as a means of
exploitation from the service provider, the Lagos State Waste
Management Agency (LAWMA), with some others describing it
as ‘unbearable and unaffordable’.

Among other indebted houses in the area are No 10, Erinosho
street (indebted to the sum of N33, 600); 9, Mobolaji street
(also indebted to tune of N41,000) and a N45, 000 debt owed
by the 11th house on Mobolaji street, all in Ogba.

NAIJ.com’s Godday Eleojo also discovered that some of these
houses got as much as N68,000 debt notice from the agency
and in a survey of Erinosho area, it was gathered that some
houses lack good foundation, structure, and suffer from bad
and un-motorable roads.

A resident who simply identified herself as Mama Amaka, said
that the bills is too much, stressing that if the occupants have
such money, they would have occupied a better apartment and
not that kind of apartment.

The bill presented by officials of the Lagos State Waste
Management Authority (LAWMA) obtained by NAIJ.com’s
Godday Eleojo

“It is clear that we occupants of Erinosho don’t have money to
pay for unnecessary bills because we wouldn’t have rented
houses in this type of area if we had such monies. And Now
the LAWMA, plans to make live difficult by placing a huge bill
on us, which is unaffordable because we don’t know where to
get the money from.

“The LAWMA officials in question don’t even come to our area
because it is not motorable, they pack somewhere where on
the road, while we run after them to dispose our wastes while
some harass us that we have not paid for the service, and now
we see bill on our door steps as a latest trend,” she
complained.

Lawal Adewale, who resides at no 11 also confirmed that
LAWMA placed a bill on his flat, “which they describe as an
accumulated bill.

“I was shocked to see a notice that contains N45, 000 debt
when I woke up one morning, we tried talking to the officials,
but they insisted that it was an accumulation.”
Fear and pandemonium have continued to grip the hearts of
these residents as the agency has clearly stated in its served
notice that failure to pay up debts within a stipulated period,
“the indebted resident will be locked out of his or her
appartment and prosecuted, as provided by the Environmental
Sanitation Edict/LAWMA 2001.”

Meanwhile, a LAWMA official who requested anonymity
because he was not in the position to talk on the matter, but
works with Gesstimate environmental protection company, told
NAIJ.com that a single room is charged the sum of N200/
month while a flat is charged N750/month, adding that the
said amount would have been an accumulated amount used
by the residents.
