Women's Olympic Basketball Qualifier

Korea v Belarus tips off at 11:30am Nigerian time today.

Nigeria tops the group with 3 points, but has a -10 point difference
Belarus are 2nd with 2 points and a +11 pt difference
Korea in 3rd with 1 point and a -1 pt difference.

So, for D'Tigress to be guaranteed a spot in the quarter finals, Belarus would have to beat the Koreans.
If the Koreans win, all teams will have 3 points. And with all losing one game each, it would come down to points difference which would likely not favor D'Tigress.

France are already confirmed as group A winners and are through to the quarter finals.

Korea beat Belarus 66-65, which means that D'Tigress are eliminated based on points difference as all 3 teams finished with 3 points apiece.

This will be Nigeria's worst Olympics EVER! Disaster everywhere. The people in charge are so used to stealing money at the detriments of the athletes that it is now the norm. Now the funds are not coming as usual, and the athletes are still being made to bear the brunt.
1. Nigerian Boxers had to use their own money to go for olympics qualification tournament. Sadiq Umar took loan up to 2000 GBP. Shame on the NOC.
2. Currently, there is a crucial olympics qualification this weekend for a very promising Nigerian talent. She needs less than 1000 USD and the federation contributed exactly 0 USD.
The athletes are at near zero motivation. The signs are not good at all.

Nigeria’s Preparation For The Rio 2016 Olympics

Poor funding, poor administration and fire brigade approach when preparing for major competitions has been identified as some of the factors militating against sports advancement in Nigeria. These were some of the issues that emerged from the discussions of sports experts and former athletes who featured on Good Morning Nigeria to discuss Nigeria’s level of preparedness for the Rio Olympics which is just six weeks away. For five times Olympic Medalist, Mary Onyali and her counterpart Chike Chukwumerije they expressed hope that the dismal performance of Nigerian Athletes in the London 2012 Olympics wouldn’t be repeated.

Foreign-based athletes set for All-Nigeria Championships

Over 50 foreign-based athletes mostly from Europe and the United States of America have arrived in the country ahead of this week’s All-Nigeria Championships billed for Sapele, Delta State.

This year’s All-Nigeria Championships which will serve as the Olympics trials Nigeria’s representatives in Rio is expected to be keenly-contested as athletes across the world have paid their way through to get a chance to fight for places in the compact squad being planned by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria.

“Yes, the athletes have started arriving; to show the zeal they have to represent this country, over 50 of them paid for their flight tickets to be part of this year’s All-Nigeria Championships,” AFN Head of Media and Communication Olukayode Thomas said in a press statement.

Thomas further confirmed that the cream of Nigerian athletics will be present in Sapele including Queen of tracks and one of Nigeria’s medal hopeful in Rio, Blessing Okagbare as well as the likes of Gloria Asumnu, Seye Ogunlewe among others

As earlier announced, the All-Nigeria Championships will hold on Thursday and Friday July 7-8 at the Sapele Township stadium while it will be closely followed by the Confederation of Africa Athletics (CAA) Grand Prix, Warri Relays on Saturday July 9 at the same venue.

Already the Relay teams from South Africa, Botswana, Ghana and other parts of the world have signified their interest to be part of the Warri Relays.

News24 had reported that 20 Nigerian athletes who are based abroad are expected to attend the Rio 2016 Olympics trial in Delta State, but that number has now increased.

The AFN President, Solomon Ogba in a recent chat with journalists said among other things, that the Warri Relays is targeted at putting the Nigeria relay team in good stead for a good show at the Rio Olympics.

“We are doing the relays because we have comparative advantage there to strive for medals. We are one of the very few countries that can boast of at least six average athletes in the short sprints, we must not lose sight of that advantage.” The AFN boss submitted.

Blessing Okagbare on Thursday claimed her 7th All Nigeria 100m title as she won the Women’s 100m event with a time of 11.02secs on the first day of the All-Nigeria Championships in Sapele, Delta State.

Okagbare, who was conspicuously missing during the 2015 All-Nigeria Championships in Warri, left no one in doubt that she was back to wrestle her title from last year’s winner Gloria Asumnu. She hinted on that when she effortlessly won her semifinal race with a time of 11.22secs.
Before Friday’s feat, Okagbare’s Championship record was 11.06 which she set when she won the 2010 edition of the All-Nigeria Championship in Calabar.

The queen of the tracks told journalists after her victory that she would not rest on her oars as she expects tougher contest in Rio.
“I am focused on myself, I am not thinking of what others are doing,” Okagbare said.

Peace Ukoh came second with 11.37sec while Gloria Asumnu finished third with 11.38secs. Aside Okagbare, another headline performance on the opening day of the Nigeria Olympic trials came from Antwon Hicks, who set a new national record (subject to ratification by the AFN) in the 110m Men’s Hurdles event.
