WHAT IS MENSTRUATION?

Menstruation is simply a monthly occurrence in women by which the lining of the uterus is been shed by the body, which then passes through a small opening in the cervix and comes out through the vaginal canal.

Though some pains, cramping and discomfort you experience during your menstrual flow is normal, however when it becomes too severe and causes you to miss school or work is highly abnormal.

Medically painful menstruation is termed as Dysmenorrhea. Basically we have primary and secondary dysmenorrhea…women who experience pains before and after their menstrual period but are normal in health are classified under primary menstruation. While women who have had normal period but lather becomes painful are said to have secondary dysmenorrhea. This condition is usually associated by a problem affecting the uterus or the pelvic organs.

CAUSES OF PAINFUL MENSTRUATION.

There may not be a specific reason for your painful menstruation. Those with severe painful experience may be at a higher risk of having painful menstrual period. However here are some factors that may contribute to your painful menstrual periods;

Having genetic mutation of painful menstruation
Smoking
Being under age 20
Having unstable periods
consumption of sugar related food
Experienced Early Puberty, which is puberty before age 11
Having been able to conceive a baby.
Painful menstrual periods in some cases as the secondary dysmenorrhea, may occur as a result of certain internal medical conditions such as;

Fibriods in the uterus(noncancerous tumors)
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), an infection of the uterus, fallopian tubes or ovaries usually caused by sexually transmitted diseases
Premenstrual syndrom (PMS)
Endometriosis ( a certain medical condition in which cells from the lining of the uterus grow in other parts of the body).
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
Cervical stenosis, in which the cervix is too small such that it tends to slow down menstrual flow.
Adenomyosis. a rare medical condition in which the uterine lining grows into the muscular walls of the uterus.
