More open support from the ranks of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have come the way of embattled Senate President, Bukola Saraki as the Kwara State chapter of the party has flayed the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) for allowing itself to be hijacked to “carry out political vendetta against perceived political adversaries.”
The position of the Kwara branch of the APC is coming on the heels of a recent statement by its deputy national publicity secretary, Mr. Timi Frank that Saraki’s prosecution at the CCT was an indictment on the party which had looked idly by while the senate president continued to face judicial inquisition.
In a statement issued in Ilorin by Kwara APC on Sunday and signed by state publicity secretary, Mr. Sulyman Buhari, the party said the CCT’s alleged contradictory ruling on the question of jurisdiction in the extant case and that of former Lagos State governor and national leader of the party, Bola Tinubu, has exposed Saraki’s trial as politically motivated.
“For anyone who ever doubted our position that the trial of the Senate President is not an anti-corruption drive but political persecution and witch-hunt, the ruling of the tribunal last Thursday is the clearest signal that what the Senate President is going through is nothing but political persecution at the tribunal,” the statement said, adding: “lt also shows that the CCT is being manipulated and remote-controlled by some desperate politicians.”
According to the party, “given identical cases, Nigerians should note that the CCT under Justice Umar Danladi discharged and acquitted a leader of APC in 2011 based on Section 3 (d) of the CCB/CCT Act. Why is the Senate President’s motion on the same Section 3 (d) of the CCB/CCT Act being denied by the same tribunal under the same Judge?”
The statement also admonished the national leadership of the APC to take a stand on the Saraki trial as “the silence of the leadership of our party is no longer golden. In the first instance, the travails of the Senate President was initiated by the bad losers in our party.
“The APC leadership should note that the Senate President has deployed his powers and influence to protect and promote the interests of the party and the agenda of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration. It is time for the party to intervene and take position on the ongoing trial.”
