At least 32 people have been killed in a gun battle between security forces and a radical Islamist group in north-east Nigeria, reports say.
Dozens of people attacked a police station in Bauchi city but were repelled, Reuters news agency said. The Islamists were fighting to have Sharia laws introduced allover Nigeria and are tired of western education and influences.

Anyone still believe that this country as we know it should continue as is? If a group or section of the country wants to have their way of life unhindered, should they not be allowed to do so in a society that reflects their beliefs while the rest should have their own system or society (nation)? To avoid this continued loss of lives in the name of religion, I believe so!

Since your profile says you're from the U.S, I propose the US be divided considering your sizeable population of Mormons who do not completely adhere to the US constitution. Right? rethink! They have their way of life and everyone else theirs.

Itz normal in Nigeria just like power failure.
Re: Bauchi Islamists / Police Clashes by Marlboro1: 3:40pm On Jul 26, 2009
And as far as I know, the mormons are neither a drag on the rest of the United States nor are the murderous in the name of religion. And by the way, the mormons here only make up to 1.9% of the population and found in only 10 states. Your people I believe make up nearly half of Nigeria, right?

Check you facts homeboy or at least read more about the peaceful mormon religion here:

Re: Bauchi Islamists / Police Clashes by imranmo(m): 4:04pm On Jul 26, 2009
It has nothing to do with population or peace but as you said  :

"If a group or section of the country wants to have their way of life unhindered, should they not be allowed to do so in a society that reflects their beliefs while the rest should have their own system or society (nation )?
The mormons want their own way of life , unhindered. So let them have it.

Imranmo,

You just said "Since your profile says you're from the U.S, I propose the US be divided considering your sizeable population of Mormons who do not completely adhere to the US constitution. " and all of a sudden you are asking what population has got to do with it. Helloooooooooooooo!

Mormons have never advocated all Americans become mormons or adopt their ways of life. When was the last time you heard about them going on killing rampage at the drop of a Kobo as have become customary in Nigeria. When have you heard mormons advocate mediocrity over excellence? Your kind of thinking only perpetuates the status quo and does nothing to advance your people or Nigeria as a "nation". You should encourage your people to get on with the time. This is 21st century, sir.

Abu-Maryam,

Perhaps you did not read the attached BBC report as outlined below:

"At least 32 people have been killed in a gun battle between security forces and a radical Islamist group in north-east Nigeria, reports say.

Dozens of people attacked a police station in Bauchi city but were repelled, Reuters news agency said.

The agency quoted a police spokesman as saying the militants belonged to Boko Haram, a group seeking the imposition of sharia law across Nigeria.

Islamic law has been in effect in the state of Bauchi since 2001.

AFP news agency quoted a hospital nurse, Awwal Isa, as saying that as many as 42 people had been killed in Sunday's clashes.

One of the dead was a soldier, he said.

Dozens of people were also reported to have been injured.

The police spokesman, Mohammed Barau, said the situation had been brought under control and that members of the gang were being detained.

One gang member, who gave his name as Abdullah, told Reuters the group had retaliated because authorities had been arresting its leaders.

The man was also quoted as saying that the group wanted to "clean the [Nigerian] system which is polluted by Western education and uphold sharia all over the country"

I dont see anywhere on the article where students were blamed for the violence. Regardless, does it make it right if students were responsible?

Any Nigerian would know that the statement attributed to the police spokesman does not hold water because no group would want Sharia imposed in any of the South Eastern states. Sometimes, we should use common sense to separate facts from fiction.

FG should step in, this is damaging to the image of the country. In fact, how many people must die before a military task force is deployed to this region.

Fanatism: Bauchi Govt imposes curfew on Bauchi metropolis

The Bauchi State governor, Isa Yuguda, on Sunday imposed a curfew on Bauchi metropolis following the invasion of the state capital by a group opposed to western education.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the group had on Saturday attacked a police station at Dutsen Tanshi area of the metropolis, which led to the death of more than 30 members of the group.

Speaking to newsmen on Sunday in Bauchi, Mr. Yuguda said that the imposition of the curfew became necessary to avoid further havoc on innocent persons.

Mr. Yuguda who said that the curfew would begin from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., everyday, appealed to residents to cooperate with government so as to ensure the protection of lives and property.

He said that the activities of the group known as "Haram Boko," was a threat to the whole nation.

"This is a threat. The emergence of a group that is trying to threaten the survival of our people.

"The arrest of the people is something that we should celebrate and it should be replicated in all the cities.

"Anywhere you see somebody who is trying to use sentiments or religion in order to take lives of innocent people, we must do something.

"The primary responsibility of government is to protect lives and property. If government cannot protect lives and property, then it has failed in its duties.

According to him: "We are happy, we had pre-empted them. We have held the bull by the horns and succeeded in getting them."

Mr. Yuguda urged religious and opinion leaders in the state to assist government in its efforts to ensure a crime-free state.

The Mormons don't try to impose the Mormon way of life across the USA. The USA is secular, if Nigeria was secular and upheld its principles life would be easier for a whole many a people.

What on earth are they trying to achieve attacking an armed to the teeth police station of disgruntled low paid trigger happy officers. All in the name of the retaliation of education? This; I have no words for this,

The primary aim of goverment is to provide good governance.

This is just the beginning, with large percentage of ppl in Northern Nigeria without acess to education we are going to expect more than this. The policies of the government have failed over time. They have failed to provide education and job our people, and you dont expect people to live ideal. They have to find a way to use their intellects. Humans are generall intelligent. The idea of government is to harness the human intellegence and use it to better the society. When all their programmes are aim towards alienating the majority poor people, deny them acess to education, better life, of course they will take up arms against the government. As far as many people in the north are concern, they hav no linkage with the government

Re: Bauchi Islamists / Police Clashes by Marlboro1: 9:47pm On Jul 26, 2009
How many more of these incidents and how many more loss of lives are we going to have before these sects are completely outlawed instead of the "nod, nod, wink, wink" from Northern leaders. They know about the existence of these groups among them for sure and have done more to encourage than discourage them. Thank God they did not set out to seek out the Igbos to lynch - as usual. As long as they are fighting people more equipped to fight back, then great for them.

What really does the life of a Nigerian worth?

I wonder why people take delight in snuffing life out of a fellow human being.

A number of Northern states have adopted sharia 100%; this in a secular democracy and to the detriment of our constitution.

So why the suprise when some of these folk begin to feel that their duty in life is to impose sharia across the country?

All sharia states might as well pull out.

In a serious country, all sharia agitators (and their Christian equivalents) would have been outlawed or taken care off like the Branch Davidians.

Thanks Seun for summing it all up. I couldnt have put it any better myself. Ignore all the idiots who are calling you names for saying it as it should be said. As in any society, there are those that hate the truth and would not like it said. If they hate your opinion or forum, I am sure they can find other homes for their filths.

Those that make peaceful coexistence impossible will inevitably reap catastrophe worse than Biafra. A stitch in time , ?
