The US military has a truly global reach, with a presence on every continent. To carry out the herculean task of promoting US interests around the world, the Department of Defense divides the globe into six areas of responsibility and three non-geographic commands. Through these nine commands, the military monitors the entire planet every minute of every day, every day of the year.

The Goldwater-Nichols Act (1987) streamlined the chain of command of the United States military. The command structure is as follows:

President
/
Secretary of Defense
/
Combatant commanders of the 9 "unified' commands (Generals and Admirals)
/
Theatre commanders (3/4-star Generals and Admirals)
/
Mid-ranking officers.

*The Service chiefs (and Joint Chiefs of Staff) exercise no operational control over the military. They are tasked with training and operational readiness of their respective branches.

The Pentagon was designed by George Bergstrom, an American architect. The US military needed a centralized building to better coordinate its military operations during WWII.
Construction started in September 1941, and the building was commissioned in January 15, 1943. The project cost $83 million (1940s dollars).

The Pentagon measures about 6,500,000 sq ft (600,000 m2), of which 3,700,000 sq ft (340,000 m2) are used as offices sitting on a 34-acre site. It houses 23,000 military and civilian employees and 3,000 non-defense support personnel. It has five sides, five floors above ground, two basement levels, and five ring corridors per floor with a total of 17.5 mi (28.2 km).

It is possible for a person to walk between any two points in the Pentagon in less than seven minutes.

Just south of the Pentagon are Pentagon City and Crystal City, extensive shopping and high-density residential districts in Arlington. Arlington National Cemetery is to the north. The Washington Metro Pentagon station is also located at the Pentagon, on the Blue and Yellow Lines. The Pentagon is surrounded by the relatively complex Pentagon road network.

The United States Postal Service has established six ZIP Codes for The Pentagon, to which the place name “Washington, D.C.” is assigned, even though The Pentagon is actually located in Virginia. The Secretary of Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the four service branches each have their own designated ZIP Code

In January 2016, ALL combat positions were made available to women for the first time in American history.

However, the US Marine Corp could seek an exemption from this new policy, for some combat roles.

An exception to Middle-East countries under CENTCOM is Israel.Somehow Israel falls under USEUCOM.

AFRICOM has no relations with Egypt or is Egypt under CENTCOM or neither of the commands have military relations with Egypt.

If so,Has that always been the case or was it recently effected cause I thought Egypt was on a Military Aid package from the US a while back.

Egypt is under CENTCOM. So too are other North African countries. Sub-Saharan Africa is under AFRICOM.
If it were up to me, Israel would be under CENTCOM because they have greater cultural affinity to other Arab countries than European nations.

Okay,thanks for that.

Yeah I agree,Israel should be under CENTCOM but am sure there's a reason for why Israel is under the European banner.

There is a conspiracy theory that the Marines have close ties to the press and always get the most coverage. They have a solid PR structure unlike other services. Truman once called it a propaganda machine that is almost equal to Stalin's

The story about their capability in the first world was also believed to have been over exaggerated by one of their press lackeys. (Battle of Belleau wood in France) And there is also the Chowder Society that lobbied to kill the bill that would have ended the Corps in 1946.

And Finally, The Corps huge and sometimes bloody rivalry with the Army. From the second world war all the way to Iraq where they have accused each other, failed to help their fellow comrades and tried to upstage each other on the battlefield.

Interesting. Maybe that explains why there were more Marine recruitment ads on tv during the last decade, than for all the other branches combined.
Nonetheless, as the 'tip of the spear' in American military tactics, I'd naturally expect some more media coverage of their activities.

Well the "tip of the spear" narrative looks weird when they were deployed to Afghanistan (a land locked country) The Army wasn't really happy about it.

In Iraq, Both of them were basically competing for Baghdad. The Army’s 5th Corps would advance from the desert west of the Euphrates river, while the First Marine division was ordered to cross the Euphrates and make a parallel advance through central Iraq. The Corps commanding officer orders were to proceed to al-Kut, but the decision to push through or bypass the town was up to him. However he decided to make a detour in other to save his men fighting in a city that isnt that strategic. His new route added like 170 miles to Baghdad and he was relieved after that since the high command expected him to assault the City.

U.S. Naval Flight Officer Lt. Cmdr. Edward Lin Accused of Giving U.S. Secrets to China

A U.S. naval flight officer with an extensive signals intelligence background was accused by the service of passing secrets to China, USNI News has learned.

Lt. Cmdr. Edward C. Lin, who served on some of the Navy’s most sensitive intelligence gathering aircraft, faces several counts of espionage and other charges outlined during a Friday Article 32 hearing in Norfolk, Va.

Lin, originally a Taiwanese national before his family moved to he U.S., had a career as a signals intelligence specialist on the Navy’s Lockheed Martin E-P3E Aries II reconnaissance aircraft, several sources confirmed to USNI News.

Several sources familiar with the case told USNI News the country to which Lin passed secrets was China, however, few other details are known about the case given much of the evidence is classified.

The redacted charging documents say Lin allegedly transported secret information out of the country without permission and then lied about his whereabouts when he returned to duty. The charging documents allege he successfully committed espionage twice and attempted espionage on three other occasions.

In addition to the accusations related to transmitting secrets to a foreign power, Lin was also accused of violating military law by patronizing prostitutes and committing adultery.

Lin is currently assigned to commander, Patrol and Reconnaissance Group in Norfolk and has been held in pre-trial confinement at the Naval Consolidated Brig Chesapeake, Va. and has been for the last eight months, sources told USNI News.

According to a 2008 Navy release on a naturalization ceremony at which he spoke, “Lin was 14 years old when he and his family left Taiwan. They had to travel halfway around the world, stopping in different countries along the way.”

He speaks fluent Mandarin and had been a department head for the Hawaii-based Special Projects Patrol Squadron Two ‘Wizards’ (VPU-2) that flew EP3-E Aries II signals intelligence aircraft, two sources confirmed to USNI News.

Lin’s job on the Aries II, which bear a resemblance to the maritime surveillance and anti-submarine warfare P-3 Orion, was to manage the collection of electronic signals from the aircraft – a central coordinator.

The specifics of how the U.S. gathers signals from potential adversaries are among the military’s most closely guarded secrets. Knowing the methodology for how the U.S. gathers signals intelligence – information that Lin would likely have with his Aries II experience – could allow adversaries to devise ways to counter U.S. monitoring.

In addition his time on EP-3Es, Lin served from 2012 to 2014 as the Congressional Liaison for the Assistant Secretary of Navy for Finance Management and Comptroller.

The last major incident of espionage by an active duty member of the Navy was the case of John Walker – a Navy warrant officer and submariner who for 18 years passed reams of military secrets to the Soviet Union before he was finally caught in 1985.

Absolutely. With the way the Obama administration is dealing with leakers, this guy's fate has already been sealed; although I don't expect a life sentence. He would probably get between 6 -10 yrs in prison.

That was serious o.
I've always wondered why the US needs two ground forces. Having just an army would serve America's military interest well.
To me, the Marines and the Army are just unnecessary duplication of duties.

There are a lot of female monikers on nairaland, I don't want to go further than this, but you should ask yourself why the HE is always posting on Foreign affairs. For Jack's sake, which woman with nice face, sultry lips and hips, will be posting these junks he do posts on F. Affairs section. Most genuine women on nairaland can only be found in celebrities and romance section.

As part of the dissemination agenda, many nairalanders use female monikers because they believe it will give them attention. He has tried and he has failed. And moreover why do you want to have something to do with the someone whom you so much hate what he represents, which is the Neocon anglozionist regime. I believe there are so many fishes with better puny in Ijebu.
