More than two decades after leading Nigeria to the
fifth position on the Fifa rankings, the highest ever
by the country, Dutchman Clemence Westerhof
wants another crack at the Nigeria national team -
the Super Eagles.
Westerhof was instrumental in assembling an
exciting band of footballers who conquered Africa
and went further to prove themselves on the world
stage in 1994.
That golden age between 1989 and 1994 could be
described as one of Nigeria’s finest in footballing
terms as the team played some attractive swash-
buckling football which gained the country a lot of
admirers.
He reckons that he can get Nigeria back to the
glory days after successive Africa Cup
of Nations no-shows.
Westehof predicted that Sunday Oliseh would not
work for Nigeria, but is certain he can - again
The Nigeria Football Federation have sounded out
a foreign coach for the Super Eagles following the
disappointing end to the Gabon 2017 qualifiers
Westerhof’s last engagement in Nigeria was with
the Kwara Football Academy but he wants a return
to the land where he made his name spending six
years on the Super Eagles job.
"Nigeria need a strong person with the required
experience to bring them out of the negative
position they are in right now,” Westerhof recently
said.
"Nigeria is a big country and the national team
should be in the top 10 in Fifa's world rankings,
not the 67th position they currently occupy.
during his time as the coach Nigeria was ranked
fifth in the world - the highest ever for an African
team "For 22 years I have watched everything I
built slowly collapse and all I need is a chance to
fix the national team again.
"With due respect to Sunday Oliseh, he was a good
player but the job of managing Nigeria is not for
an inexperienced person and that is the reason
things never worked out.
"I know what Nigeria lacks and needs to be
respected in the world again.
Westerhof feels he is the man to sort out Nigeria’s
dwindling fortunes as he insists he has unfinished
business with the Super Eagles.
"I left Nigeria as number five in the world and now
I want to do it again, this is my second country
and what I accomplished then is possible again,"
the Dutchman said.
"Just give me the Super Eagles again and watch
what we can all achieve together."
