Napoleon Irianan, Founder and CEO of Canadian based technology company, Phronetic Labs, has partnered with the developers of the world’s most advanced virtual drilling simulator technology in the oil and gas industry, and is looking to introduce this ground breaking technology to universities, polytechnics and technology institutes across Nigeria.

The virtual drilling simulator technology, will greatly benefit undergraduate students studying petroleum or production engineering, as well as boost the overall perception and academic standard of the educational system in the country.
Napoleon Irianan, Founder & CEO Phronetic Labs
With an ever upward and rising competitive global work force, there’s been a corresponding rise in the demand for quality education on the part of students in order to get that competitive edge in the job market, and top quality engineers and graduates on the part of employers, in order to get the most resourceful candidate that will be assets to their companies. As a result of this unending trend, it is unfortunately getting more and more difficult for most graduates to get ahead or even get their foot in the industry of their profession, especially those competing with graduates with degrees from foreign universities.

This being more prevalent in the oil and gas sector, the leading sector of the country, where oil and gas employers are demanding nothing but the best and most educated engineers who can captain their industries. With well over two million Nigerian students and graduates studying and living overseas, to ensure they get the best quality education in order to compete on the local and international job market, it is paramount and important that already available academic infrastructure and technology that makes those foreign universities attractive to Nigerians, be gradually introduced here at Nigerian universities in order to level the playing field and boost the overall perception and standards of the educational system of the country. With cutting edge and the most ground breaking one of a kind virtual drilling technology peculiar to its kind, gradually introduced in petroleum and production engineering departments across the country, students will get the best quality training with state-of-the-art technology.

The plethora and thousands of information, programs, algorithms, simulation and rig scenarios housed and programmed into these virtual simulators can then be customized, embedded and integrated into the students curriculum over their four or five-year university period or time duration at various institutes. They can be run as independent centers as well, where oil & gas workers can come receive further training.

The technical, visual and feedback information programmed and stored in the software of these simulators is practically inexhaustible by any one student. The vast amount of information that will be gained by each student, just spending a few hours a week on these simulators, will practically put the power and tools needed to excel as professionals in their field, directly in the hands of the students and when they begin their professional careers, they will be light years ahead of their peers who have learned on a purely theoretically basis with no means of applying said gained knowledge in an actual working practical environment. Due to the intrinsic direct hands on nature of the visual and cognitive learning process of these simulators, as compared to purely reading textbooks without any points of references, students learn at a more rapid pace, working with multiple touch screens, they learn to multi task (a very important skill if you are working on the rig) because now they can see how everything works under various fluctuating conditions, they can adjust and handle such conditions (like blowouts, oil spillage etc) and get instant feedback from the system. They can finally put things they read in their textbooks into the right perspective and in the right contexts.

Without sounding too technical, the system is able to simulate and replicate thousands of conditions and scenarios occurring on the rig and in the oil wells, literally thousands. Students can replicate and simulate situations that range from, managing and supervising their own drillers on a rig, to studying and monitoring the constantly changing geothermal gradient & high pressure high temperature (HPHT) states of what’s going on thousand of feet below the ground. The system is able to simulate real-time simulation of formation and circulation systems, different gases and their behaviors, gas expansion and migration, deviated well geometry, directional drilling, swab and surge pressures, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), Finite Element Analysis (FEA), stripping in and out, as well as leak off testing. The system is able to simulate and replicate unlimited well plans, hundreds of equipment (drill bits, compressors, valves etc) 20-rig instrumentation, as well as over 60 different malfunctions and their contingencies to, just to name a few.

Students will get real-time feedback in the form of visuals
The system constantly monitors the students’ performance profiles, they get an after scenario report and can see how much power was used, the health and safety conditions of all workers on the rig while they were at work, how much power they used, how efficient their drill techniques, instrumentation setup and well plans were, how much money was made (or lost) as a result, and how it translates directly into the global oil trading market in dollars and cents per barrel. This is serious engineering! One that will not only equip students with both the basic and advanced technical training needed to excel in their fields, but will also give them that much needed confidence boost required by new graduates who are just entering a challenging and rigorous workforce. Not only will it set them apart in their technical performance, but it will also refine their thinking methodologies and approach to problem solving, which will eventually set them up to be captains and leaders of industries. This is the end game and ultimate purpose of education, in whichever form we may acquire it.

Napoleon, who is currently on a trip back in Nigeria scouting the various academic institutions offering petroleum, production or gas engineering, says; this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the Nigerian academic institutions to step up, put themselves on the world map and rub shoulders with the academic giants and elite institutions of the world, academic institutions like Cambridge, Oxford, Harvard and MIT whose graduates are well-recognized and respected around the world. Nigeria could definitely become the standout country in Africa leading and paving the way in the petroleum engineering departments. Its leading sector is oil and gas, so it’s only natural that we equip our students and engineers with the latest infrastructure and enabling technology that will make them be the best they can be. The simulators are fully certified according to the global petroleum industry standards, and students who train with it can add an extra certificate to their respective degrees gotten from their own universities and institutions. Thus, having what is technically and mentally required to fully succeed and excel at their various academic institutions and levels of organizations, either at a national or international level.
