Absolutely not. The beauty of the blogosphere is that truth and quality eventuality rise to the top through user preferences. Once you tinker with that freedom and create a walled garden you get something very different and inferior. Control is a bad idea on the internet - it creates small spaces that nobody but specialists and heavy nerds visit.

The second problem is enforcement. If I have a blog hosted abroad how do you enforce your "principles" on me? What if your principles are wrong or unduly restrictive?

The BEST that can be done is to have a voluntary code of best practice that bloggers can choose to adopt. Maybe seven simple principles - none of which should restrain content through the back door because after all - a blog is someone's idea of what is true, informative or worth hearing and the best people to judge this are the readers themselves not a small group of faceless judges. The objective should be improving quality not restricting membership.

This would be a back door to the dark ages.

Controlling would be eediotic. But even if it becomes the law, how on earth do you think you can enforce it?! If my site (blog, whatever) is hosted outside Nigeria, if the domain is registered outside Nigeria, if I am located outside Nigeria, how do you think you can make me do anything (or not to do!)?!?! Boolcrap.

Well this is the best for bloggers in Nigeria for the year 2016.
I commend the op for the job well done.
But, this may not be accepted by maturity of bloggers.
Reason? Copy and paste is at 70%. The policy won't favour them.
Re: What Do You Think About Nigeria Having An Association Controlling Blogging by datGuyJoo: 7:58am On Apr 21, 2016
It's actually laughable. Every site has the same thing and only one source of truth.
You could all band together and collectively do some research, you would have better quality content but nope, it's more of a race to see who can copy better and be first to post it better than a photocopy machine, no skills required.
Bloggers creed: Just learn Control A, Control C and maybe use Control X

I don't think it will work. Although google has a way of dealing with such blogs; in the sense that the blog can't be monetized by google Adsense.

You're very funny.

I don't agree with the OP that would be like taking away people's right to free speech.

If he is concerned about the copy and paste bloggers, then he shouldn't worry because Google has a way of dealing with such people using their page ranking system.
Re: What Do You Think About Nigeria Having An Association Controlling Blogging by bedfordng(m): 9:00am On Apr 21, 2016
none of this will ever work because the internet it self is a free platform. This is not done anywhere in the world. So nigeria don't have a little of what it takes to build an association for that. Although, most countries has blogging association for professional bloggers which is different from what op is trying to bring up. This idea will never work since the internet is a free platform

Op is right in some way.. But it's just the entertainment and gossip blogs that write the same thing, those guys are hardly ever creative.

That's why I'm a proud health blogger, I have written over 50 unique posts.

Blogging should be a way for you to express your knowledge, opinions, creativity and interest to the world, not just making money.

i cant agree with u more..... i am into personalities and unique lifestyle blogging. it might require more time and creativity, but its still worth it. i have phobia for gossipz...

Having an association is just plain nonsense. From what I have learnt in Nigeria, associations are created with two main reasons in mind.

1. Patronage from Government
2. Dictating what can be posted online, dictating price etc.

I don't subscribe to any association because of this reasons and of course their stupid act of enforcing everyone in the said section to join them. It's stupid and barbaric. And will create more problems.

Like someone said, it's wrong with the whole copy and paste thing but it will slowly ebb away

Association of traders
Association of landowners
Association of pepper sellers
Association of pepper grinders
Association of barbers
Association of bakers
Association of truck drivers
Association of bricklayers... una no dey tire? forming an association is not going to guarantee regulations.. enforced cyber policies will. By the way... are u going to ask all bloggers to "fill form"? *funny

Sometimes I begin to imagine what the future have for blogging in Nigeria. Everyday hundreds of blogs are created in Nigeria without any plan. The same post i see on Cheezy's blog is the same post i will see on Lara's blog and several other blogs without even trying to change the topic, image or atleast reconstruct the post.
When thinking about it today, I just feel like an association should be setup up for bloggers and every blog both old and new should be registered.
The association will ensure that every blog in Nigeria meets up to standard before they can proceed with registration.
New blogs should be well examined and the blogger will have to pass through some serious examination.
Any blog that doesnt meet up to standard should be taking as a personal blog and must not be monetised but can accept donations anyway.

And any blog which deals in copy and paste should be warned and if it persists, the blogger can be sued for copyright infrigement.
Atleast with this, even if there are over a million entertainment blogs in Nigeria, they will all have totally different and interesting posts which will never get anyone bored.

This is just my thought and i will like to know your opinion on this..

Gosh..erm..but why reason like this?
You got the internet on a platter of gold.
Now you want to restrict your fellow man??
You even want to restrict how they receive monetary rewards?
Are you for real?
Do Newspapers and Tv newscasters not post similar writeup and broadcast glaring similar newlines?

An association in itself is not bad, but your intention for it is so evil man.

All over the world, it is hard to regulate blogging. Its virility has come to stay. In as much as i do not support plagiarism in blogging but you must realise that what actually will different hardworking bloggers from the copy and paste ones is the natural progress the former will have as against the later.
Google identifies that right from the beginning and chooses to work with the dedicated genuine bloggers while leaving the copy and paste ones to struggle. Hard work pays. Work hard and make progress.

@ Donkenzy47

You made a very good point, but the flexibility and dynamism that exists in the blogging will make it nearly impossible to control the system as mentioned. At any level, you can only do little to control web activities talk less of association as you suggested.

While Security remained inversely proportional to flexibility in the online activities, the integrity of blogging continued to get loose day in day out in the hands of armature and dubious bloggers because more tools to make life easier in that sphere continued to spring up every day.

Am a Civil Engineer and a web developer with few websites purposely built for deploying web based engineering design applications for construction industry. A friend brought this kind of idea recently but it wasn't followed up beyond three discussion as all my thought and research has been based on creating tools for engineering design. Our aim then was to open up an advocacy web portal were people are to be mentored on how to professionally do blogging.

If you really want us to built a system to sanitize blogging atmosphere in our part of the world, hail me so as to continue from were we stopped before by proceeding to

Creating the initial web portal for taking off
Creating a core team members based on interest and profile
Drafting Constitution
Electing BOT
Suggesting a website Name
Registering the name as an NGO.

All above can be done remotely at the initial.

I don't know if anything of such exist in Nigeria right now. But if there is any kind of such association, I will be ready to join and contribute my quota instead of creating another new one.

The OP 's suggestion is one of the worst suggestions ever posted on Nairaland. Why do Nigerians believe so much in regulation and anti-free market policies? Everywhere you go, there is an association creating a cartel and the result is inefficiency and lack of innovation.

Why would anybody want to regulate something as Democratic as blogging?
