Prior to the Portuguese name of Lagos (which means “lakes”) being adopted, Lagos was originally called Eko, which stems from either Oko (Yoruba: “cassava farm”) or Eko (“war camp”), by its Bini conquerors.

By 1851 after the abolition of the slave trade, there was a great attraction to Eko by the repatriates. First, were the Saro, mainly freed Yoruba captives, and their descendants who, having been set ashore in Sierra Leone, responded to the pull of their homeland, and returned in successive waves to Lagos.

Armed with the privilege of Western education and Christianity, the Saro made remarkable contributions to education and the rapid modernization of Lagos.

The Brazilian returnees, the Aguda, also started arriving in Lagos in the mid-19th century and brought with them the skills they had acquired in Brazil.

Most of them were master-builders, carpenters and masons, and gave the distinct characteristics of Brazilian architecture to their residential buildings at Bamgbose and Campos Square areas, which form a large proportion of architectural richness of the city.

Ultimately, the impressive road network in Lagos must be attributed to the British colonialists who designed and built many of the roads in Lagos today especially in areas such as Ikoyi, Yaba, Lagos Island, Surulere, and other parts of the mainland.
1.Allen Avenue

Allen Avenue is one of the most famous streets in Ikeja; it was initially a residential area with refined and urbane accommodation, but now has offices, shopping malls, eateries and nightclubs for the opulent. It is easily accessible and well connected to some roads in Ikeja such as Opebi and Adeniyi Jones.
2. Broad Street

Broad Street, located in Lagos Island, and is one of the oldest streets in Lagos. The street is one of a kind, home to several financial banks. Its colonial and modern architecture mesh seamlessly in a manner quite descriptive of Lagos itself.

You will find some of the tallest buildings in Lagos here. Normally, you will find bankers, corporate officers and business people walking in this area. There are a few restaurants but Broad street is mostly all business.
3.Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue

Ozumba

Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue is located in Victoria Island. This street is one of the most elegant and famous streets on the Island. It’s a street with beautiful hotels, shiny office buildings, and leisure and event centres.

1004 Flats used to be the star of this road. These apartment blocks have recently been eclipsed by the Civic Center and Civic Towers, 2 beautiful modern architectural pieces that have become first choice for landscape photographers.
4. Bode Thomas Street

Bode Thomas Street is one of the most famous streets in Lagos. It was named after Chief Bode Thomas, a Nigerian Politician and statesman.

The street is located close to Iponri in Surulere, and adjourns the nearly as popular Adeniran Ogunsanya Street. After the recent uplift of the road network in Surulere by the former governor, Babatunde Fashola, Bode Thomas has become one of the busiest yet most attractive roads in Surulere. The street has quite a lot to offer anyone thinking of relocating to Surulere.
5. Ademola Adetokunbo Street
