The Nigerian Senate has reportedly bowed to

Justice Danladi Umar, the chairman of the
Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).
Sahara Reporters reports that the Senate
committee on ethics, privileges, and public
petitions, composed of 11 members met
today at the National Assembly in Abuja and
hastily decided to drop the summon issued to
CCT chairman.
Meanwhile, the Senate has suspended the
ongoing amendments of the Code of Conduct
Bureau and the Code of Conduct Tribunal
acts, following an outcry by Nigerians who
accused the Senate of trying to shield its
president, Bukola Saraki.
Senate also suspends the Amendment of

A bill for an act to amend the Administration
of Criminal Justice Act, 2015 and other
related matters, seeks to remove the CCT
from the list of courts statutorily empowered
to initiate criminal proceedings against
accused persons and it has already passed
its second reading.
A civil society group, Friends in the Gap
Advocacy Initiative (FGAI) described the
move by the Nigerian Senate to amend the
CCB and the Code of Conduct Acts as ill-
timed and ill-motivated.
Recall that on Monday, April 18, the Senate
ethics committee summoned Umar to appear
before it unfailingly on Thursday to answer
questions on allegations of bribery against
him.
The summon came on the heels of Justice
Umar’s order that Bukola Saraki, the Senate
president’s trial will be held daily from 10am
to 6pm.
