I believe its function is to shield the signal power fed into the laptop from stray electromagnetic field so as to prevent undesired interference with the functionality of the laptop.

No its not old technology. The system still exists in new laptop chargers just that it has bin integrated into d power pack and made smaller this time around. And yes sire I am an electrical engineer and that's what I breathe. Sorry for d late reply
