Police Recruitment Exercise Will Be Scientific – Igp by iflywithbuhari(f): 7:12am On May 04, 2016
Inspector General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase has revealed that the ongoing recruitment exercise would go through layers of scientific processes to automatically knock out undeserving elements. He said this as the Police Service Commission, PSC, has said it had received 843,008 applications from unemployed youths seeking to be enlisted into the force, the vacancy of only 10, 000 was announced. In a statement yesterday, the commission’s spokesman, Mr Ikechukwu Ani stated that as at 1pm yesterday (Monday), PSC received 243,327 applications from intending Assistant Superintendents of Police, ASP, while 197,990 and 401,691 applicants applied for the Inspector and Police Constable cadres respectively. Nigerian Pilot recalls that as at April 19, the commission said in a statement that it would recruit 500 Cadet ASP, 500 Cadet Inspectors, 1,500 Specialist Officers and 7, 500 Constables. Only 10,000 policemen are to be recruited into the Nigeria Police Force following presidential directive last August. Chairman of the commission, retired Inspector General of Police Mike Okiro has earlier described the process of receiving the forms as smooth and transparent, even as he assured that the commission was committed to making the recruitment exercise a huge exercise, adding that the commission would continue to make the process of the recruitment transparent. He assured the applicants of fairness and equal opportunity since the commission is only interested in recruiting for the police the best brains in the society. Arase, while speaking on the sideline of a paper he presented at a public lecture organised by the University of Jos at the weekend, assured that the exercise would be done differently from previous ones to get the best for the police. He particularly said a psychometric test designed to ascertain the ability, usefulness, aptitude, critical thinking and situational judgment, as well as the personality of the new recruits will be carried out as part of the exercise to take only applicants deserving of the police job. “Certainly, we are doing it differently; that is why we are doing the application online. If you are not qualified, before you start downloading it, you will be knocked out. If you don’t meet our age criteria; our educational qualification criteria; you would be knocked out. We are going to adopt some scientific approach to the recruitment this time. We will carry out psychometric test, drug test so that the margin of error will be very minimal.” He confirmed that the police approach to recruitment, previously, was not scientific, as a result of which cases of undeserving elements finding their ways into the force. “Our approach through the recruitment was not scientific. Now we want to ensure it is more scientific to reduce human errors,” he added.
