The Sydney woman arrested trying to flee the country this morning after a bank mistakenly gave her $4.6m spent millions on handbags and luxury goods, a court has heard.

Christine Jiaxin Lee, 21, was apprehended trying to board a flight to Malaysia and has been charged with dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception and knowingly dealing with the proceeds of crime.

The chemical engineering student was given access to the extraordinary amount of funds when Westpac accidentally linked an unlimited overdraw facility to the account she opened in 2012, the Waverley Local Court heard.

"It isn't proceeds of crime. It's money we all dream of," Magistrate Lisa Stapleton was quoted as saying by Fairfax Media.

Ms Stapleton said she agreed with Ms Lee’s legal aid lawyer Fiona McCarron that it would be difficult for police to prove Ms Lee had done anything illegal.

"She didn't take it from them. They gave it to her," Ms Stapleton said.

If this was the case, Ms Lee would still, however, owe the bank the millions of dollars, she said.

Ms McCarron said her client had made numerous withdrawals on the overdraft between July 2014 and April 2015.

About $1 million had been spent on handbags, luxury items and some transfers, she said.

The total amount overdrawn was $4.6m, of which $3.3m remained outstanding.

Ms Stapleton granted Ms Lee bail under strict conditions, including reporting to Ryde police twice daily, and surrendering her passport.
